The ICT Industry Outlook Conference is now in its 19th year.
The Ministry of Science and ICT will hold the '2020 ICT Industry Outlook Conference' for two days from the 5th to the 6th at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jung-gu, Seoul.
This event will bring together approximately 1,000 domestic and international ICT experts and businesspeople to share domestic and international issues and prospects facing Korean ICT. We also discuss the roles of policy and industry in the soon-to-come hyper-connected society.
On the first day, the 5th, a total of eight lectures were given by domestic and international experts in three presentation sessions, including a keynote speech on the theme of "ICT, Changing the World," ICT Environmental Changes, and 2020 ICT Outlook.
The conference opened with keynote speeches by Lee Jae-young, President of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, and Park Sang-gyu, Vice President of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute.
In the ICT Environment Change session, Professor Kim Nan-do of Seoul National University presented on '2020 Consumer Trends in Korea', and Gartner, Boston Consulting Group, and Naver participated to present on the latest ICT technology trends and business innovations, including AI.
In the final session, the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP), which are ICT outlook organizations, presented on 'Changes in the External Environment and the Prospects of Our ICT' and 'Top 10 ICT Issues for 2020,' respectively.
The top 10 ICT issues selected for 2020 are as follows.
1. 5G: A Head-to-Head Race to Become the World's Leading Technology
2. Protectionism: The spread of global hegemony is spurring domestic ICT innovation.
3. AI: Accelerating the widespread use of artificial intelligence.
4. Regulation: Creating a Breakthrough for New ICT Growth Through Regulatory Reform
5. Mobility: A Turning Point in Korean New Mobility Innovation
6. New Southern and New Northern Policies: Breaking Free from China-Japan Trade Dependence
7. Subscription Economy: The Spread of New ICT Consumption Trends
8. Semiconductors: South Korea's Semiconductor Industry in 2020: A Year of Coexistence of Crisis and Opportunity
9. Changes in Labor in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: Automation, Unmanned Systems, and Platform Labor
10. Green ICT: The ICT Industry's Efforts for a Sustainable Environment

In his welcoming address, Jang Seok-young, Director General of the Information and Communication Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “I hope that this conference will serve as a place where our ICT industry, faced with direct and indirect threats and changes such as Japan’s export restrictions and the US-China trade war, can find wisdom and foresight.”
He also stated, “The Ministry of Science and ICT will do its best to foster new future industries through ICT, secure leading talent, and innovate ICT research and development (R&D) to achieve the 4th Industrial Revolution that makes everyone happy.”
On the second day of the event, the 6th, a total of 27 presentations will be held under the theme of 'Hyperconnected Society, New Opportunities', with three tracks of 'Core, Device, and Service' each consisting of three sessions of 'Policy·Technology, Industry, Convergence·Issues·Controversy'.

The government has secured a budget for supporting high-tech startups by middle-aged and older entrepreneurs. It will provide 31.8 billion won to support technology startups for the Baby Boomer generation aged 40-50, who account for 66% of the startup market, and allocate a total of 15.4 billion won to emerging technology startup sectors such as artificial intelligence, big data, and Internet of Things. The automotive semiconductor market is rapidly growing in the era of autonomous driving.
자동차 한 대에 들어가는 반도체 수는 2010년에는 약 300개 정도였으나, 레벨 3 이상 자율주행차량이 본격적으로 상용화 될 2022년에는 약 2,000개의 반도체가 필요할 것으로 전망된다. 2021년까지 5년간 차량용 반도체 시장은 연평균 12.5% 성장할 전망이며, 2023년에는 약 585억 달러의 시장 규모를 형성할 것으로 예상된다. 차량용 반도체 시장에서 한국이 한 자리를 차지하기 위해선 급변하는 기술 환경과 규제의 벽을 객관적으로 파악하고 이에 대처하기 위해 OEM, 티어1·2, 반도체, ICT 업체 간의 협력이 필요하다.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the UK are conducting joint research on 5G-based AR/MR services.
The Ministry of Science and ICT will launch a Korea-UK international joint research project with the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to develop 5G-based immersive content services in high-speed environments. On the 6th, a joint research kick-off workshop will be held at ETRI in Daejeon with approximately 50 participants including government officials and research personnel from both countries. This research was first discussed at the 3rd Korea-UK ICT Policy Forum held in Seoul in February 2018, and has been planned over approximately one year. The joint research topics are 5G ultra-high frequency wireless transmission and ultra-high-speed immersive media services in high-speed train environments. Korea will focus on developing 5G technology for real-time transmission of ultra-high-capacity information inside subway trains, while the UK will focus on developing ultra-high-speed AR/MR technology that can be operated on 5G networks.

ST Microelectronics and NUS Establish Joint Research Center 'HELIX' for Edge AI
ST Microelectronics and the National University of Singapore have established the 'HELIX' joint research center aimed at implementing embedded AI in edge environments.
