Creating an open AI ecosystem where large, medium, and small enterprises can participate


Industry, academia, and research institutes have decided to collaborate to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic AI industry.

KT, Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Hanyang University, and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on the 20th that they signed an MOU and formed an 'AI One Team' in the conference room on the first floor of the main building of KAIST in Daejeon.

This formation was made to implement the 'National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy' announced by the government last December. Through the formation of the AI One Team, KT, Hyundai Heavy Industries, KAIST, Hanyang University, and ETRI have agreed to ▶establish a talent development platform, ▶induce the discovery and dissemination of AI+X application cases, ▶create an AI open ecosystem, and ▶establish an alliance secretariat.

The AI One Team is jointly building an 'AI education platform.' Through this, they plan to enable SMEs, ventures, and students to pursue new AI categories and gain experience based on their ideas. To this end, GPU-based high-performance computing resources, training data, and online/offline training programs are provided.

We will also launch 'Industry-Oriented Practical AI Training Courses' open to everyone to foster technical personnel tailored to the specific characteristics of each industrial sector. Through this, we plan to resolve the shortage of practical technical personnel, which is a major obstacle to securing AI talent. We will also establish an 'AI Talent Platform' to connect the supply and demand of AI talent.

To rapidly spread AI across all industries, collaboration with industry leaders is also necessary. Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to expand the AI+X ecosystem by sharing its application know-how and technology with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and mid-sized companies.

AI One Team is also establishing an open AI ecosystem to enable free participation by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Through this, the plan is to share successful AI digital transformation case studies across various industries, including manufacturing, distribution, services, and finance, and expand the ecosystem into one where necessary solutions and talent can be easily accessed.

Each participating institution of the AI One Team open-sources and shares its core AI technologies, and also promotes joint research to continuously accumulate data and case studies for sustained utilization in the industry.

The secretariat for the AI One Team will be established within KT. KT also plans to create a pipeline that enables the sustainable growth of Korea's AI industry.

Jang Seok-young, the Second Vice Minister of Science and ICT, stated, “To secure domestic AI competitiveness, voluntary cooperation from the private sector, such as this MOU, is very important as well as the government,” adding, “The government will actively support private sector efforts to implement the national AI strategy and strive to ensure that AI policy results are achieved early.”
