Discovery of 10 Gigabit Internet-based Immersive Service Models


Due to the impact of COVID-19, services aimed at improving the efficiency of video conferencing and remote lecture systems, as well as creating work environments for remote work, are gaining attention.

On the 9th, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency (NIA) selected the final project implementing agencies for the 2020 10 Gigabit Internet Activation Promotion Project.

NIA selected the SK Broadband Consortium and the KT Consortium as the final project implementing agencies through the open call for proposals (January 31 – March 2) for the 10 Gigabit Internet activation promotion project.

The selected implementing organizations consist of telecommunications companies, equipment developers, and service developers, and promote service activation based on the expansion of 10-gigabit internet infrastructure, the discovery of application services, and the development and verification of domestic technologies and equipment.

In particular, with the changes in the work environment caused by COVID-19 and the increase in the use of wired and wireless content, we plan to focus on discovering and developing immersive media content solutions based on 10-gigabit internet for general households (B2C) and businesses (B2B).

In addition, it supports the discovery and commercialization of convergence application service models such as AI and AR. It expands 10-gigabit internet coverage in small and medium-sized cities and rural areas based on the development of domestic wired-wireless integrated technologies and equipment linked to 5G and 10-gigabit internet, and the domestic 10-gigabit internet equipment completed in 2019. Through this, efforts are also being made to lay the foundation for bridging the digital divide and providing high-quality ICT services.

In addition, to expand support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), more than 90% of the government budget for the 10-gigabit internet project will be used to support the purchasing and development costs of SMEs, and based on this project, telecommunications operators plan to expand the 10-gigabit internet infrastructure by investing more than 45 billion won of their own budget.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT and NIA have been promoting the 10 Gigabit Internet service promotion project since 2018 to secure growth engines through the fostering of the domestic network equipment industry and to create a virtuous cycle ecosystem for 10 Gigabit Internet.

In the 2019 project, core domestic 10-gigabit internet technologies and equipment were developed for each medium, and service expansion was supported through the testing and verification of 10-gigabit internet development equipment in small and medium-sized cities. Through the development of domestic 10-gigabit internet technologies and equipment such as optical cables, LAN cables, and coaxial cables, a foundation was also laid for the expansion of 10-gigabit internet services nationwide, including not only large cities but also small and medium-sized cities and old downtown areas in the provinces.
