Korea's first personal service robot safety certification obtained
We also acquired ISO 13849, a motor safety standard.


Unlike industrial robots, personal service robots are used alongside people in everyday life, so safety is of the utmost importance.

Samsung Electronics announced on the 21st that its self-developed wearable walking assistance robot, 'GEMS (Gait Enhancing and Motivating System) Hip', received international standard 'ISO 13482' certification from the Korea Robot Industry Advancement Institute.

ISO 13482 (Robots and robotic devices - Safety requirements for personal care robots) is an international standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2014 to ensure the safety of three types of personal service robots: mobile servant robots, physical assistant robots, and person carrier robots. This is the first time a domestic company has obtained ISO 13482 certification.

GEMS is a wearable walking assistance robot that uses robotics technology to enhance walking and motor skills, helping people walk more efficiently and stably in their daily lives. It was first unveiled at CES 2019 last year.

GEMS, which can be worn on the hip, knee, or ankle joints to reduce the load on the major muscles involved in walking, are available in three types (Hip/Knee/Ankle). The recently certified GEMS Hip is a body assistance robot worn on the hip joint, providing approximately 24% of walking force and increasing walking speed by 14%.

GEMS Hip is also certified to ISO 13849 (Safety of machinery – Safety-related parts of control systems), a functional safety standard for control systems that enable motors to operate safely.

Moon Jeon-il, president of the Korea Robot Industry Advancement Institute, said, “Ensuring safety is crucial for expanding the service robot market,” and added, “We expect that starting with this certification, service robots that meet strict international standards will expand in Korea as well.”
