Five Samsung AI Researcher Award Winners Announced


Samsung Electronics held the 'Samsung AI Forum 2020' online from November 2nd to 3rd.


The Samsung AI Forum, now in its fourth year, is a forum where world-class AI experts share the latest technological trends and research achievements, exploring ways AI technology can help human lives, which have been rapidly changing due to recent pandemics and other factors.

This AI forum was broadcast live on Samsung Electronics' YouTube channel, providing researchers and students in the AI field from around the world with the opportunity to engage in real-time Q&A sessions with world-renowned scholars.

In his opening remarks, CEO Kim Ki-nam stated, “Although AI technology has recently been rapidly applied to people’s lives and had a positive impact, problems requiring large amounts of data, such as pandemics and natural disasters, are challenges that are difficult to solve with current AI algorithms and hardware,” suggesting the direction in which AI technology will move forward.

Vice Chairman Kim also said, "Samsung Electronics, as a core technology company in the AI ecosystem, is interested in these issues and is working to find the right solutions.He emphasized Samsung Electronics' role, saying, "We are actively collaborating with researchers around the world."

Samsung Electronics announced the winners of its new "Samsung AI Researcher Award," which was established this year to discover outstanding global emerging researchers in the field of AI.

The winners are Professor Kyung-Hyun Cho of New York University, USA; Professor Chelsea Fin of Stanford University, USA; Professor Seth Flaxman of Imperial College London, UK; Professor Jiajun Wu of Stanford University, USA; and Professor Cho-Jui Hsieh of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Professor Kyung-Hyun Cho of New York University said, "I am delighted that Samsung is taking the lead in awarding meaningful awards to young researchers in the field of AI," and added, "This award will motivate me to dedicate myself even more to AI research."

Additionally, Professor Yoshua Bengio of the University of Montreal in Canada, who is the co-chair of the 'Samsung AI Forum' and was appointed as this year's 'Samsung AI Professor', gave a lecture on the topic of 'Discovering Causal Relationship Expressions'.

In addition, the event featured presentations by prominent speakers, including Dr. Jennifer Wortman Bourne of Microsoft Research, who gave a lecture titled “Understandability of Machine Learning.”
