"Will 5G Be Ultra-High-Speed?" 28GHz 5G Equipment and Terminal Activation Task Force Launched

The launch meeting of the 28㎓ 5G mobile communication construction activation task force (TF) was held on the 12th.

The task force will continue to include the Ministry of Science and ICT, the three major mobile carriers, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), and the Korea Telecommunications Operators Association (KTOA), who participated in the previous task force to leverage their experience in operating the rural 5G communication network roaming task force.
Additionally, Samsung Electronics, the National Intelligence Service (NIA), and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP) will participate in various discussions, including verification of 28 GHz equipment and terminal performance.
The 28㎓ 5G Construction Activation Task Force was launched in February after a consensus was reached on the need to build a 28㎓ band 5G network during a meeting between the Minister of Science and ICT and the representatives of the three mobile carriers.
The meeting discussed overseas construction trends, measures to activate domestic convergence services, pilot service promotion plans by telecommunications companies, joint verification of 28㎓ 5G equipment and terminals, and the direction of 28㎓ 5G network construction.
Heo Seong-wook, Director of the Network Policy Office at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “We will gather wisdom from various stakeholders and experts for the construction of a 28㎓ 5G network, and discuss a wide range of topics from 28㎓ equipment and terminal performance verification to network construction plans, and do our best to activate 28㎓ 5G.”dquo; was revealed.
Meanwhile, as of last year, the number of 5G base stations in the 3.5GHz band nationwide reached 166,250, while the number of 28GHz base stations was only 45. Consequently, some are even suggesting reclaiming the 28GHz band and returning the winning bid (KRW 622.3 billion) to the three mobile carriers to strengthen their 3.5GHz networks. The industry believes the 28GHz band is suitable for B2B use.

The ongoing debate over 28GHz 5G: "Will we be able to deploy it this year?"
5G만의 초고속 특성은 28GHz 대역에서의 사용을 전제로 한다. 3.5GHz 대역만으로는 늘어나는 무선 수요에 대응할 수 없기에 해당 대역이 반드시 필요하다. 하지만 2021년 1분기가 절반을 넘어선 시점에도 28GHz 기지국과 단말기의 상용화는 요원하다. 이통 3사의 28GHz 5G 인프라 구축이 여전히 시늉 수준에 머물고 있기 때문이다. 업계에선 아무리 정부가 드라이브를 걸어도 주파수 특성상 28GHz 5G는 B2B 한정, B2C에선 3.5GHz 5G 보조 역할에 그칠 것이라 보고 있다.

5G quality assessments will be implemented nationwide starting this year.
올해부터 5G 서비스 품질평가 대상 지역이 85개 시 주요 행정동에서 모든 행정동으로 확대된다. 평가 결과는 상반기 중간결과와 하반기 종합결과로 나뉘어 연 2회 발표된다. 더불어 모바일 동영상 서비스 평가 대상에 기존 유튜브, 네이버TV, 카카오TV 외에 넷플릭스, 웨이브 등을 추가했다.

유럽특허청(EPO)의 ‘기술 대시보드 2025’에 따르면 지난해 유럽 특허 출원은 20만1974건으로 처음 20만건을 넘었다. 한국 기업과 발명가의 출원은 1만4355건으로 전년보다 9.5% 증가해 국가별 5위를 유지했다. 배터리와 디지털 통신, 반도체가 증가세를 이끌었고, 삼성은 2년 연속 EPO 최대 출원 기업, LG는 3위에 올랐다. 서울·수원·용인 등 국내 주요 도시의 존재감도 확인됐다. 한국의 유럽 특허 전략이 개별 기술을 넘어 산업 전반으로 확장되고 있다는 점도 드러났다.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
