Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Moon Seung-wook announced that he would prepare a plan to focus on supporting investments in the 8-inch foundry process.

On the 7th, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Moon Seung-wook visited Silicon Mitus, a fabless power semiconductor company, and held a meeting with the system semiconductor industry to hear opinions from related companies.

At this event, Minister Moon Seung-wook said, “The recent shortage of automotive semiconductors is spreading to the IT industry, and the international situation surrounding the semiconductor industry is becoming increasingly urgent,” and added, “In order to become a comprehensive semiconductor powerhouse, the growth of small and medium-sized fabless companies is important first. To this end, we will further reinforce infrastructure facilities such as the AI Semiconductor Design Support Center in Pangyo, where the Design Support Center is located, and transform Pangyo into a cradle for fabless startups and growth, including providing semiconductor design SW free of charge.”

He also stated, “We will expand financial, tax, and funding support related to semiconductor investment,” and “In particular, in order to actively respond to the recent shortage of foundry supply, such as the shortage of automotive semiconductors, we will prepare a plan to focus on supporting investment in not only cutting-edge advanced processes but also 8-inch foundry processes.”

In addition, “In order to ensure a stable supply of semiconductor design personnel in the fabless industry, we will expand the semiconductor contract department, adjust the number of students in universities, open joint departments, and expand the innovation sharing university."Everyone said," he said.

Minister Moon said, “We will include specific details related to this in the K-Semiconductor Belt Strategy that will be announced soon.”

Meanwhile, Silicon Mitus, the company being visited this time, is a fabless company that domestically produced display PMIC (power management integrated circuit) for the first time in Asia in 2008 and is leading domestic technology in mobile, small battery, and display PMIC.

Recently, the company has been producing power management chips for OLED and AVN installed in automobiles, and is also conducting business related to automotive semiconductors.

In the domestic system semiconductor meeting held afterwards, system semiconductor companies such as fabless, design houses, and IP design companies participated and discussed the development direction to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic system semiconductors. The participants suggested the following: △ quantitative and qualitative expansion of specialized manpower, △ expansion of R&D investment and support for demand linkage, △ support for strengthening the capabilities of design houses and IP specialized companies, and △ support for startup infrastructure.
