Samsung Electronics' Kim Yun-sun, Master, 3GPP 6G Standardization Work Team

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 12th that Master Kim Yun-seon of Samsung Electronics' Next Generation Communications Research Center was elected as the chairman of the 105th International Conference of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Physical Layer (RAN1), which will be held electronically from the 10th to the 18th.
This marks the first time a Korean has been elected as chair of one of 3GPP's 15 working groups. The RAN1 working group, which promotes standardization of wireless access physical layer technologies, is the largest working group, with approximately 600 participants. Samsung Electronics has secured a total of five chairs (two chairs and three vice chairs) in 15 3GPP divisions.
Master Kim Yun-seon, who was elected as the chairman for a two-year term, has served as the vice chairman of RAN1 since 2017, and has led the standardization of 5G by directly presiding over meetings on key 5G technologies such as MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output), eMTC (enhanced Machine Type Communication), NR power control, IAB (Integrated Access Backhaul), and DSS (Dynamic spectrum sharing).
By becoming chairman of the 3GPP Wireless Access Group, Korea will be able to lead the standardization of a more advanced technology (Release 18) than the initial 5G technology. Furthermore, it has laid the foundation for a leading position in preparation for 6G, the next-generation mobile communications technology.
Heo Seong-wook, Director of the Network Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, commented, “Following our election as the Chairman of the ITU 6G Vision Group in March, we have now secured the position of Chairman of the 3GPP, giving us an advantageous position in the international standardization competition for advanced 5G technology standardization and 6G leadership.”

5G Smart Busan Port Starts with “Remote Crane Control”
Busan Port Authority is partnering with LG Uplus to implement 5G network at Busan Port. The deployed network will be utilized in various fields including cargo handling equipment and logistics warehouses. 5G is well-suited for upgrading existing ports to smart ports. If wired networks were installed, it would require halting container terminal operations, which must run 24 hours, 365 days a year, and optical cables would limit the operating range of cranes. In contrast, by utilizing 5G, a remote control system can be established without additional construction work.

TTA-Gyeonggi Innovation Center Supports 5G Millimeter Wave Terminal Development
TTA and the Gyeonggi Innovation Center signed an MoU to support domestic startups and SMEs in developing 5G millimeter-wave terminals and expanding into overseas markets. The two organizations will provide support for 5G international certification testing, 5G technology consulting and product development support, network interoperability testing through 5G millimeter-wave testbeds, and space provision for 5G activation.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
