Establishing a "Four-Based System" for 5G Convergence Service Testbeds

On the 10th, Second Vice Minister of Science and ICT Cho Kyung-sik visited the 5G convergence service testbed and discussed ways to support the expansion of 5G convergence services and the advancement of 5G equipment.
The Ministry of Science and ICT will build a 5G core network system within the Pangyo Enterprise Support Hub and establish 5G base stations (3.5/28GHz) and test facilities in four regional hubs across the country (Pangyo, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Daegu) to support the development of 5G terminals, equipment, and service technologies centered on these regional hubs.
The four major base management organizations are the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI, Daejeon/Gwangju), the Telecommunications Technology Association of Korea (TTA, Pangyo), and Daegu Technopark (Daegu), and the test beds are scheduled to be upgraded based on 5G standalone mode (SA) starting in the second half of this year.
The testbed provides terminal and service development, testing, and verification for small and medium-sized manufacturers. At the meeting that day, △Thirteenth Floor (metaverse), △Team Grit (5G real-time image processing-based robot), △Netcube Technology (5G-based government work environment), and △LS Telecom (defective product detection) introduced their solutions being developed through test beds.
Second Vice Minister Cho Kyung-sik held a meeting with small and medium-sized 5G equipment manufacturers, service developers, and the three major mobile carriers. He also discussed the current state of the 5G market and ways to strengthen the competitiveness of Korean companies. Vice Minister Cho stated, "We will strive to contribute to the revitalization of the 5G market by expanding new services and devices through the 5G convergence service testbed."

U+ to Deploy 5G MEC-Based Robots at Gwangju May 18 Center
LG UPlus announced that it has secured a contract for a business project to discover 5G convergence services utilizing MEC and lead public sector application at the 5.18 Memorial Culture Center in Gwangju Metropolitan City and other venues. MEC is a network technology that processes data at locations close to users, such as base stations and exchanges, without transmitting it to backbone networks or data centers. It reduces traffic load on backbone networks and minimizes latency for specific services.

Seoul City completes 5G C-ITS demonstration project, aims for commercialization by the end of this month.
SK Telecom announced its plan to complete the demonstrative project for C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport System), a next-generation intelligent transportation system that connects all vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic infrastructure in Seoul via 5G, by the end of this month and move forward with commercialization. Seoul City and SKT are building a platform to provide information secured through C-ITS to private navigation service providers via 5G, enabling these providers to deliver the information in real-time to their service users. The platform is expected to be completed by 2022.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
