ST EVLMG1-250WLLC Reference Design,

MasterGaN1 with STDRIVE gate driver


STMicroelectronics today released its first reference design for its MasterGaN power package. The EVLMG1-250WLLC reference design is a 250W resonant converter implemented in a 100 × 60mm board size and a maximum component height of 35mm.

The MasterGaN1 featured in this reference design includes a half-bridge STDRIVE gate driver connected to two 650 V normally-off GaN transistors with matched timing parameters, 150 mΩ on-resistance, and a maximum current rating of 10 A. Logic inputs are compatible with 3.3V to 15V signals.

MasterGaN1 is suitable for high-efficiency soft-switching topologies such as resonant converters, active clamp flybacks, forward converters, and bridgeless totem-pole power-factor correction (PFC) in DC/AC inverters, DC/DC converters, and AC/DC power supplies up to 400 W.

The primary side can operate without a heatsink, leveraging the high efficiency of GaN power transistors. Furthermore, it can support higher operating frequencies than conventional silicon MOSFETs, enabling the use of smaller magnetic components and capacitors, thereby increasing power density.

Designed for a nominal 400 V supply voltage, the EVLMG1-250WLLC delivers 24 V/10 A output and achieves efficiencies exceeding 94%. MasterGaN's integrated safety features protect the converter output from short-circuits and overcurrent. Brown-out protection and input voltage monitoring are also available, enabling sequencing within the DC/DC converter array and preventing motor startup during undervoltage conditions.

ST's MasterGaN family is housed in a low-profile 9mm x 9mm GQFN package and comprises integrated half-bridge products with pin compatibility, including symmetric and asymmetric configurations. They feature circuits rated up to 650V and feature a creepage distance greater than 2mm between high- and low-voltage pads. MasterGaN modules are available in a variety of power ratings, allowing designs to scale with minimal hardware changes.

The EVLMG1-250WLLC is currently being distributed through st.com and other retailers, and is priced at $230.
