Samsung Electronics has expanded its 'carbon footprint' certification to include LED products, along with memory and system semiconductors.

Samsung Electronics announced on the 22nd that 20 of its next-generation memory semiconductor products have received ‘Product Carbon Footprint’ certification from Carbon Trust, and that the successor products of five memory semiconductor products that received ‘Product Carbon Footprint’ certification last year have received ‘Carbon Reduction Certification’ in recognition of their carbon reduction.

Samsung Electronics obtained product carbon footprint certification for 20 memory products, including SODIMM (8GB/16GB) and LPDDR5 (8GB/12GB/16GB), following the four system semiconductor products it obtained in September.

Additionally, five memory products (HBM2E (8GB), GDDR6 (8Gb), UFS 3.1 (512GB), Portable SSD T7 (1TB), microSD EVO Select (128GB)) received carbon reduction certification.

Carbon reduction certification is a certification granted when carbon emissions generated during the production process of a product that has received product carbon footprint certification or its successor are actually reduced. The amount of carbon emissions reduced during the production process of these five products is approximately 680,000 tons, which is equivalent to the amount of carbon absorbed by approximately 100 million 30-year-old pine trees in a year.

Samsung Electronics has successfully reduced power consumption and raw material input per product thanks to next-generation memory chips that are smaller and more productive than previous generations. Furthermore, the company has improved product power efficiency and switched from plastic to paper packaging for some products, minimizing carbon emissions throughout the entire production and distribution process.

In addition, Samsung Electronics' four C-Series (Gen3 3W White, Gen3 3W Amber, Gen2 3W White, Gen2 3W Amber) full-length LED package products were the first in the industry to receive UL's carbon footprint certification.

The products certified this time contribute to reducing carbon emissions from existing internal combustion engine vehicles and reduce power consumption, allowing electric vehicle batteries to be used for longer periods of time.

Samsung Electronics plans to continue developing LED product lines that can reduce carbon emissions from the manufacturing process, in line with the recent eco-friendly trend in the automobile industry.
