Samsung Electronics has selected Taylor as the location for its new US foundry investment. Samsung Electronics is investing $17 billion in Taylor, targeting operation in 2024.

On the 23rd, Samsung Electronics held a press conference at the Texas Governor's Mansion with Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kim Ki-nam, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Senator John Cornyn, and other officials in attendance, and announced its plan to invest in the U.S. foundry.

The new line in Taylor City is scheduled to begin construction in the first half of 2022 and be operational in the second half of 2024, with an expected investment of $17 billion in construction and equipment. This is Samsung Electronics' largest investment in the United States to date.

This new line will utilize advanced foundry processes and will produce advanced system semiconductors for various fields, including 5G, HPC (High Performance Computing), and AI (Artificial Intelligence).

Samsung Electronics is expected to be able to more seamlessly provide advanced microprocessing services to global system semiconductor customers leading the semiconductor sectors related to AI, 5G, and the metaverse.

Vice Chairman Kim Ki-nam said, “This year marks the 25th anniversary of Samsung Electronics Semiconductor’s entry into the U.S. market, and this investment in the new semiconductor line in Taylor will serve as a cornerstone for preparing for a new future.” He added, “Through the new line, we will not only stabilize the global semiconductor supply chain, but also contribute to the development of the local community through job creation and talent development.”

Samsung Electronics selected Taylor after comprehensively considering several factors, including synergy with its existing Austin production line, stability in the semiconductor ecosystem and infrastructure supply, cooperation with local governments, and community development.

The new site, measuring approximately 1.5 million square meters in Taylor City, is located just 25 kilometers from the Austin plant, allowing the company to utilize the existing infrastructure nearby. It also boasts excellent infrastructure, including water and power, necessary for operating a semiconductor production line.

Additionally, the Texas region is home to a variety of IT companies and leading universities, providing significant advantages in securing foundry customers and top talent.

It is also expected that the city will achieve shared growth with the local community through talent development, such as through regular donations to the Taylor City School District and on-site internship programs for students.

The new line in Taylor City, along with Line 3 in Pyeongtaek, is expected to serve as a key production base for Samsung Electronics to achieve its 'System Semiconductor Vision 2030'.
<br /> With the construction of this line, Samsung Electronics' global system semiconductor production system linking Giheung/Hwaseong-Pyeongtaek-Austin/Taylor will be strengthened, and it is expected to contribute to a more rapid response to customer demands and the acquisition of new customers.

Furthermore, it is expected that this will contribute to the development of the next-generation IT industry, including the acceleration of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, by stabilizing the global semiconductor supply chain and expanding the ability to respond to diverse, new, cutting-edge system semiconductor demands in the long term.

At the "Korea-U.S. Business Roundtable" event held in Washington, D.C. in May, Samsung Electronics announced plans to build a foundry semiconductor plant in the U.S. to contribute to the economies of both countries by establishing a supply chain in the advanced manufacturing sector.

He added, “We look forward to expanding our partnership to help Texas emerge as a leader in advanced technology and a dynamic economic powerhouse.”
