SK Telecom is taking the lead in practicing 'ESG in daily life' by utilizing AI-based technology in company cafeterias to reduce food waste.

SK Telecom announced on the 2nd that it will launch a "Zero Waste Campaign" starting in February to reduce food waste by applying "AI Food Scan" technology in collaboration with the ESG startup Nubilab.

SKT said it would apply 'AI Food Scan' technology to the cafeteria inside SKT Tower to analyze the amount of food waste generated daily in real time.

'AI Food Scan' technology is a system that analyzes the types and amounts of food waste in real time by installing AI-based food scanners and sensors at dish return counters in restaurants. The food scanner learns images of food based on AI to recognize the type, and the sensor analyzes the amount of food.

By applying 'AI Food Scan' technology, satisfaction levels for each menu item can be predicted based on members' consumption and food waste rates, allowing for the implementation of optimal recipes and the reduction of food ingredients.

In particular, to encourage voluntary participation from members, the status of collected food waste was made available in real-time for those leaving after their meals. Additionally, a dashboard was installed to display the number of times "zero food waste" was achieved, the number of plastic straws used, and the carbon reduction effect converted into equivalents such as planting pine trees.

Meanwhile, Nubilab, which applies 'AI Food Scan' technology in collaboration with SKT, is a healthcare solution startup focused on reducing food waste and analyzing personal dietary data, and is a member of 'ESG Korea 2021' selected by SKT.

Nubi Lab explained that businesses where AI Food Scan technology has been applied have seen an average reduction of over 30% in food waste since installation.
