Launch of a global 5G mobile edge computing (MEC) platform
Minimizing communication delays and enhancing efficiency, safety, and security.

SK Telecom (CEO Yoo Young-sang) is joining hands with global IT company Dell Technologies to expand Korea's 5G mobile edge computing (5G MEC) technology overseas and take the lead in creating a global 5G ecosystem.

SK Telecom announced on the 24th that it has launched a 5G MEC platform together with Dell Technologies (hereinafter referred to as Dell).

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is a technology that installs small data centers around base stations close to users, shortening data transmission distances and providing ultra-low latency communications.

SKT announced that the 5G MEC platform it recently launched is a product that combines SKT's 5G MEC solution and Dell's server that provides computing performance optimized for MEC.

The 5G MEC platform consists of network virtualization functions specialized for MEC, platform operation tools, and a user environment for MEC service users.

The 5G MEC platform can be customized for each target company and institution, and integration with the public cloud will be supported in the future.

SKT and Dell announced plans to supply the 5G MEC platform not only to global telecommunications companies but also to overseas companies and public institutions planning to introduce 5G dedicated networks.

He also said that he plans to strengthen the 5G E2E (End-to-End) business, which comprehensively provides consulting, infrastructure construction, and maintenance services in addition to selling 5G MEC solutions.

Kim Jin-woo, head of SKT Global Business, said, “As global telecommunications companies are paying attention to MEC technology as a means of expanding 5G services, SKT’s 5G MEC technology is highly evaluated in the market.” He added, “In the future, we will take the lead in creating a global 5G ecosystem by collaborating with Dell on preemptive technology development and launching various products, as well as expanding our business to a SaaS (Software as a Service) model in which various domestic and foreign companies can participate.”
