In the pandemic era, it is becoming more important than ever for high-tech companies to innovate rapidly to overcome the problems of raw material shortages and environmental pollution. As the scale of AI, edge cloud, 5G, metaverse, and blockchain increases rapidly, attention is focusing on solutions to respond to them.

Super Micro Computer participated in Computex, Asia's largest PC and IT exhibition, and announced a total IT solution on the 25th. Charles Liang, founder and CEO of Supermicro, held an online press conference during the event to share insights on market trends and innovation, and introduced green computing and building block solutions.

CEO Charles Liang explained, “I came up with the idea of Building Block Solutions 20 years ago, based on the thought that by standardizing various form factors at the service system level, we could create products optimized for various applications and workloads using the same parts and components. Building Block Solutions is a crucial foundation that enables Supermicro to apply the latest technologies to its extensive product portfolio, including AI, GPUs, servers, storage, and workstation solutions, and bring them to market more quickly.”

He stated, “We are communicating with Silicon Valley, semiconductor manufacturing and design companies, and are providing building block solutions while maintaining ongoing relationships with more than six of the world’s top 10 semiconductor companies.” He went on to argue, “It is possible to manufacture new products by simply changing the design slightly without expanding facilities, and this solution enables low-cost, rapid growth in terms of inventory, production, design, and service.”

In particular, he appealed for participation in the Green Computing Mission, stating, “Green computing can save $7 billion in electricity and make 30 thermal power plants unnecessary,” and explained, “Green computing can increase design efficiency and enable efficient design at the system level.”


CEO Charles Liang stated, “We are using rack systems without cooling equipment by deploying free air cooling without artificial cooling,” adding, “Intel’s data center cases have used free air cooling for most of the 500,000 systems over the past few years, saving energy and total cost of ownership (TCO).”

When asked if liquid cooling is a major trend, he stated, “Using free air cooling in low-rack systems can significantly reduce electricity costs.” However, he noted that liquid cooling could be an option in cases of poor air quality. He added, “We have been developing water cooling solutions for several years. Liquid cooling is currently in a very early stage with a market share of only 1%, and we will strive to expand our liquid cooling market share to 20-30% in the future.” The free air cooling market is also expected to grow rapidly, although it is a minority of less than 5%.

He stated, “We have the capability to design, produce, and ship more than 3,000 Plug and Play (PnP) racks per month globally.” Supermicro supports data center performance upgrades through full multi-rack cloud integration, including liquid-cooling options, and tested and verified configurations.

Supermicro has more than tripled its software resources over the past three years and is targeting OEMs, data centers, and the rapidly growing enterprise market by building new capabilities. He stated, “Over the past decade, we have poured massive investments into strengthening data center software capabilities and enhanced Infrastructure as a Service and Monitoring as a Service capabilities,” adding, “Supercloud Composer enables data center operators to improve server, storage, and AI-related workloads and efficiencies, and to replace resources through high-performance analytics.”

Meanwhile, CEO Charlie Liang commented on the supply chain crisis, stating, “The pandemic is still lurking, and I think it will take a few more months to improve the supply chain.”
