[Editor's Note] The first Make Contest 'Show me the Things,' hosted by e4ds, has concluded. Held under the theme "Show Me Your Temperature," the contest was enriched by a variety of entries utilizing temperature and humidity sensors. We conducted an interview with rudals, one of the three honored winners of the 'Things' award. In this contest for items designed to make our daily lives smarter, he was selected for the award for his 'Desktop Voice-Guided Temperature and Humidity Gauge.'

Please introduce yourself.
As a developer with a strong interest in hardware and software, I participated in this Make Contest under the nickname rudals.

■ How do you feel about winning the first MAKE contest?
I feel a sense of satisfaction from having produced a result based on an idea I personally conceived. As a result, I was even given the opportunity to win an award, so I feel very proud and happy that I was able to finish the contest satisfactorily.

■ Why did you participate in this contest?
I found out about the contest through the mailing list. I participated because an idea came to me after seeing the theme of this self-directed contest, and I thought it would be fun to implement it.

■ Please explain your winning entry.
The idea that immediately came to mind when I saw the theme of this contest was a 'desktop voice-guided thermometer and hygrometer.' It visually displays the temperature and humidity values read from the sensors on an OLED screen. Audibly, it announces the read sensor values verbally when you clap twice. I thought this feature would be fun, so I decided to implement it.

Is there a reason you came up with this idea?
There was no particular trigger. While thinking about various things, the idea of 'voice output of temperature and humidity values' suddenly occurred to me. By adding a display and a battery, I ultimately created a 'desktop voice-guided thermometer and hygrometer.'

■ Were there any difficulties during the development process?
Due to the limited flash size of the chip used, voice data could not be stored, so an external Micro SD card interface had to be implemented. Additionally, using the existing graphics library resulted in an excessively large code size, so it was replaced with a graphics library capable of displaying only text in the simplest way. Subsequently, image display-related functions could be implemented within the limited size by adding functions that draw directly to the graphics buffer.

■ What aspects of the work would you like to improve?
In noisy environments, there are cases where it malfunctions by mistaking noise for applause. I would like to improve this aspect.

■ What did you gain from this contest, and what are your future plans?
It was a good opportunity to turn what I knew into a finished product.

Personally, it was a very satisfying contest because I also had the opportunity to win an award. I plan to actively participate in any future events hosted by e4ds.
