SK Telecom, together with Amazon Web Services (AWS), will build Korea's second 5G edge cloud service base, '5GX Edge Zone', in Seoul, expanding the core infrastructure based on edge cloud to accommodate various services in the metropolitan area.

SK Telecom announced on the 7th that it has newly established '5GX Edge Zone', the second 5G edge cloud service base in Korea, in the Seoul area in cooperation with AWS.

'5GX Edge Zone' refers to the base where SKT 5G MEC (Mobile Edge Computing) and AWS Wavelength are built.

Located on the shortest path where 5G and the cloud meet, it minimizes network latency and allows applications to be implemented in the same development environment as AWS.

SKT's '5GX Edge Zone', which was built in Seoul following Daejeon in 2020, focuses on maximizing the experience of users in the densely populated metropolitan area, and is a customer service center that utilizes the 5G edge cloud.He said that by distributing the demand for the cloud, the efficiency of customers' cloud access was increased.

Additionally, SKT and AWS are introducing a new '5G Edge Discovery' technology to jointly provide optimal edge cloud services based on customer location.

SKT announced that it will expand its '5GX Edge Zone' and cooperate with various partners in AI, robotics, and healthcare to expand 5G-specific services.

△Proceeding with various service scenarios for verification of outdoor delivery robots with 'Newbility', a company specializing in autonomous driving-based robots △Implementing a service to remotely monitor patients' health status in real time using a smartphone on the edge cloud with 'Seers Technology', a healthcare solution provider △Collaborating with 'MachinaRocks', an industrial AI company, to improve manufacturing process efficiency through real-time analysis and anomaly detection of data from industrial sites based on 5G edge cloud.

Kim Myeong-guk, head of SKT’s cloud business, said, “By establishing the second ‘5GX Edge Zone’ in Seoul, we can accommodate the diverse new service demands concentrated in the metropolitan area centered on edge cloud,” and “We will strive to expand the 5G edge cloud into a core infrastructure that discovers innovation in each industry, such as games, media, manufacturing, and healthcare.”
