WD Achieves Automotive SPICE Level 3 Certification

As software-defined vehicles (SDVs) emerge as a key element of next-generation mobility, traditional IT manufacturers are actively entering the electronic components market. Since functional safety and standard certification are essential for the adoption of electronic components, obtaining relevant certifications is crucial.
Storage company Western Digital (WD) announced on the 28th that it has obtained Automotive SPICE (ASPICE) Level 3 (CL3) certification for its 'iNAND AT EU552 UFS 3.1 embedded flash drive'.
ASPICE, based on ISO/IEC 15504, is an industry standard for evaluating automotive embedded software development processes. It demonstrates the software and development capabilities of automotive suppliers and manufacturers, including meeting OEM requirements and adopting best practices in automotive software development processes.
ASPICE Level 3, the Established stage, represents a level of maturity beyond Level 2 Managed where processes are clearly defined, standardized, and actively managed. WD has achieved ASPICE Level 3 certification through design considerations for ASPICE certification from the early stages of development of the iNAND AT EU552 UFS 3.1 embedded flash drive.
Today's SDVs emerge from the ongoing evolution of automobiles, moving beyond mere transportation to transforming from hardware-based machines into software-centric devices on wheels.
Today, premium vehicles can utilize up to 150 million lines of software code across hundreds of electronic control units (ECUs), sensors, cameras, Lidar, and other devices. For automotive OEMs, supporting the proven quality and reliability of these software-centric systems is becoming increasingly important.
With this ASPICE Level 3 certification, Western Digital can now provide high-quality, highly reliable products to the automotive industry.
Western Digital said it has a portfolio of automotive-grade NAND storage solutions, including eMMC, UFS, and the soon-to-be-released BGA SSD, leveraging its decades of experience as a storage company. This supports the evolving needs of automotive customers who are producing smart vehicles with increasingly diverse features.
Western Digital's automotive-grade iNAND family of products enables 100% pre-loading of device capacity prior to the surface-mount technology (SMT) step, reducing complexity and costs in customers' production processes.
Western Digital meets the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ISO 26262 functional safety standard across its automotive portfolio, complies with the Automotive Electronics Council (AEC) AEC-Q100∙104 standards, and holds International Automotive Task Force (IATF) IATF 16949 certification.
