STMicroelectronics (ST), a global semiconductor leader, is strengthening its competitiveness in the next-generation power supply market with new GaN products that satisfy three core values: design simplicity, silent operation, and high-efficiency power management.

STMicroelectronics today unveiled a series of integrated GaN flyback converters targeting a variety of applications, including USB-PD chargers, fast battery chargers, and auxiliary power supplies.

The first product in the series, the VIPerGaN50W, integrates a 700V GaN power transistor with a flyback controller and optimized gate driver into a single compact package.

This eliminates the need for gate resistance and inductance adjustment, reducing design complexity and shortening time to market.

It also reduces the number of components, simultaneously reducing BOM cost and improving power density.

VIPerGaN50W operates in quasi-resonant mode based on zero voltage switching (ZVS), and optimizes efficiency by applying frequency foldback at light loads and valley skipping at medium and high loads.

In particular, ST's proprietary Valley Lock technology suppresses audio frequency fluctuations, ensuring noiseless operation across the entire load range.

When not in use, it switches to burst mode, reducing power consumption to less than 30mW., which is a level that meets global environmental regulations.

The new product maintains stable output and frequency even when the supply voltage fluctuates through the line-voltage feedforward function.

Additionally, switching loss is minimized with dynamic blanking time, and reliability is enhanced with overvoltage, overheating, and brown-in/brown-out protection functions.

ST provides the EVLVIPGAN50WF evaluation board to help developers quickly implement the 15V/50W isolated flyback converter.

The board operates over a 90-265VAC range and can utilize the built-in features of the VIPerGaN50W, such as the sense FET and high-voltage startup circuitry.

The VIPerGaN50W is in production in a 5mm x 6mm Power QFN (PQFN) package and is available through ST's eSTore and authorized distribution channels, priced at $1.09 in quantities of 1,000.
