As the amount of data to be processed in AI and high-performance computing (HPC) environments increases, data center power design is also demanding greater density, efficiency, and stability. In particular, ensuring a stable power supply within the confined space of server racks is emerging as a key challenge.

Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCPF) announced the release of its MCPF1525 power module, featuring a built-in 16V input buck converter, to address this demand. The MCPF1525 provides 25A of DC-DC current per module and is designed to scale up to 200A by stacking multiple modules. This configuration is designed for AI data center environments that require more power within the same rack space.

This product supports programming and control capabilities via PMBus and I2C interfaces, enhancing system power management flexibility. Applications include the latest-generation PCIe switches for AI acceleration and MPUs for high-performance computing.

In terms of packaging, the vertical structure was adopted to maximize board space utilization. The module measures approximately 6.8 × 7.65 × 3.82 mm, focusing on reducing board area compared to existing products. This is said to be suitable for AI server designs with significant space constraints.

For enhanced reliability, PMBus-based diagnostics are also included along with overheat, overcurrent, and overvoltage protection. The operating junction temperature range is -40°C to +125°C, making it ideal for data center and industrial computing environments. Additionally, the onboard EEPROM allows for storage of default power settings.

Microchip presents the MCPF1525 as a power solution that can be utilized with its PCIe switches, FPGAs, MPUs, and NVMe controllers, and explains that it can contribute to design simplification and shortened development times. The MCPF1525 is priced at $12.00 in 1,000-unit quantities and is available through Microchip and authorized distributors.
