Ettifos, a South Korean company specializing in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication, is accelerating its push into the global smart transportation market after proving its next-generation smart tolling technology capabilities in the United States.

Etipos announced that it jointly demonstrated a V2X-based tolling service with automotive security specialist AUTOCRYPT and global communications chipset leader Qualcomm at the 36th 5GAA (5G Automotive Association) General Assembly held in Sacramento, California, USA from the 2nd to the 5th.

This demonstration is considered a case proving that toll payment services utilizing V2X communication can be implemented in a real commercial environment.

The event attracted significant interest with the large-scale participation of global automakers such as BMW, Volkswagen, and Audi, as well as Tier 1 suppliers like Harman and Valeo, and major road infrastructure companies including Kapsch and Indra.

Etipos took a central technical role in this demo by providing high-performance on-board tolling units (OBUs) and roadside units (RSUs) hardware based on Qualcomm chipsets.

Here, Autocrypt's V2X tolling application and security module are combined to implement an end-to-end tolling service that simulates a real payment environment.

In particular, its strength is considered to be that it is designed based on the international standard SAE J3217, ensuring global scalability and interoperability.

"It is very meaningful to be able to directly demonstrate tolling services, a representative use case of V2X, to U.S. road operators and global customers," said Park Yong-tae, CTO of Etipos. "We hope that this demonstration will serve as a turning point for the expansion of V2X technology into practical services."

Etipos plans to use its demonstration at the 5GAA General Assembly as a springboard to fully enter the U.S. next-generation tolling market. Furthermore, the company aims to strengthen its position in the global V2X ecosystem by expanding its business scope into the future mobility payment market, which includes unmanned vehicles such as autonomous cars and robots.

Amidst the stagnant V2X industry environment caused by uncertainty regarding domestic C-ITS policies, Etipos's recent achievement is expected to serve as a new breakthrough for domestic technology companies' overseas expansion and the revitalization of the industry.
