The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) achieved 92 international standards in the fields of AI, 6G, and immersive media last year, increasing its cumulative international standard patents to 1,312. ETRI announced on the 8th that it achieved a total of 92 international standard accomplishments in 2025, including 42 international standards enacted or revised and 50 international standard contributions reflecting patents. During the same period, the number of patents adopted in international standards increased by 97, and the cumulative number of international standard patents was tallied at 1,312. It also secured 22 new leadership positions in international standardization organizations.

Looking at the sectors, in AI, emphasis was placed on establishing utilization standards, such as testing and verification methods and reliability evaluation systems, rather than on the algorithms themselves. In next-generation communications, standardization activities continued regarding network intelligence, automation, wireless access, and interference management, with a view to the advancement of 5G-Advanced and preparation for 6G. In immersive media, a prominent approach was securing both standards and patents, targeting service environments extending to XR and spatial computing.

The achievements in standardization also led to royalty income. ETRI's royalty revenue from standard patents totaled 131.3 billion won over the past three years, with 36.7 billion won in 2023, 44.4 billion won in 2024, and 50.2 billion won in 2025. The main sources of revenue were next-generation communication technology and immersive media. This demonstrates that patents reflected in international standards are not merely research achievements but are leading to revenue assets utilized in the industrial field.

Securing a leadership position is also significant. The leadership of international standardization organizations is a role involved in shaping the direction of standard discussions and the technology adoption process. This can be seen as an achievement demonstrating that ETRI is expanding its voice not only in technology development but also within the structure of international standard discussions. It also confirms that the strategy of accumulating both standards and patents in fields where competition for market dominance is fierce, such as AI, 6G, and immersive media, has become even more distinct.
