To mark its 50th anniversary, the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) placed an AI humanoid robot at the forefront of its official events. The fact that a humanoid robot was the symbol put forward on the 50th anniversary stage by an institution that has supported the industrial foundation in the fields of precision equipment, production systems, and energy for half a century demonstrates that the central axis of mechanical technology research is shifting beyond supporting traditional manufacturing to intelligent machine systems.

The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) held a ceremony commemorating its 50th anniversary at its headquarters in Daejeon at 10 a.m. on April 14 and unveiled the humanoid robot 'KAIROS' for the first time. Along with the publication of a 50-year history and the awarding of honors to distinguished contributors, the event also presented a mid-to-long-term vision outlining future research directions and representative technology groups.

This unveiling cannot be viewed merely as a commemorative performance. Earlier this month, the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials assessed that humanoids have entered a turning point for commercialization and announced that it would pursue the first version of Kairos by April 2027 and subsequent advanced stages by 2030 through the Autonomous Growth AI Humanoid Strategy Research Group. Placing Kairos at the center of the stage at the 50th anniversary event was like overlapping the research schedule and the institution's strategy on a single screen.

The technology bundle unveiled by KIMM on this day also points in the same direction. Along with humanoids, the institute presented advanced manufacturing equipment, industrial thermal energy conversion, air purification, and virtual engineering platforms as its representative fields. This signifies an intention to simultaneously pursue the maintenance of manufacturing competitiveness, the response to carbon neutrality, and the advancement of digital engineering within a single organization. This aligns with the recent trend of KIMM promoting the development of AX and DX-based technologies under the banner of 'Digital-KIMM 2030'.
