SKT Establishes 'SK Hyper,' a Specialized AI DC Subsidiary, to Build 15GW Infrastructure

SK Telecom has established a separate entity dedicated to its AI data center (DC) business and has begun full-scale construction of an AI infrastructure hub in Asia. Under a mid-to-long-term plan to sequentially expand AI DCs to a total capacity of 15GW by 2035, the structure involves a dedicated organization taking charge of the entire process, from securing sites to building and operating substations and attracting customers.SK Telecom announced on the 24th that it resolved at its board meeting on the 23rd to establish 'SK Hyper,' a subsidiary specializing in AI DC business development, and to invest 750 billion won through a spin-off by 2030.
SK Hyper is a wholly owned subsidiary of SK Telecom and operates by injecting funds within the investment limit whenever necessary.
SK Hyper's core functions include securing sites, constructing and operating substations, and attracting customers and commercializing.
The goal of Phase 1 is to gradually launch a 5GW AI DC by 2029, and to expand it to a total of 15GW by 2035 to reflect market demand.
Regarding site location, a regional decentralization approach was adopted, starting with the Ulsan GW-class AI DC cluster and adding GW-class facilities in the Chungcheong and Southwest regions.
SK Telecom also separately established an 'AI DC Integration Promotion Team' directly under the CEO to consolidate group-level AI DC capabilities.
Jeong Seok-geun, Head of SK Telecom's AI CIC, has been appointed as the first CEO of SK Hyper.
CEO Jeong will concurrently serve as the Head of the AI DC Integration Promotion Team and will be responsible for coordination among AI DC implementation organizations within SK Group and business promotion.
He holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from KAIST and an MBA from Georgetown University, and served as the CEO of Naver Clova CIC.
SK Hyper CEO Jeong Seok-geun said, “We will secure core infrastructure and customers through systematic and rapid execution, and contribute to Korea’s leap to becoming one of the top three AI powerhouses.”

SKT 'Haein' Cluster Acquires CSAP Certification... First Case in Korea Based on Blackwell GPUs
SK Telecom's Blackwell GPU-based AI data center cluster 'Haein,' which is in operation, has become the first in Korea to obtain CSAP (Cloud Service Security Certification) IaaS category certification, which is administered by the Korea Internet & Security Agency. The Haein cluster, composed of over 1,000 Blackwell GPUs, meets public cloud requirements including network segmentation and data isolation, and is currently being utilized for training government AI foundation models. Through this certification, SKT plans to expand into the public and financial sectors in the sovereign AI cloud market.

SKT Transitions All T World Stores to AI… Phased Introduction by 2027
SKT is converting customer service at approximately 300 T world stores nationwide to an AI-based system. Starting in June, it will disclose star rating information collected through STT technology, and begin pilot operation of an AI agent for franchisees from September. By 2027, it will gradually introduce customized store search, AI consultation analysis, and T crew task support agents to enhance customer trust.

SK Telecom, SoftBank, and the Institute for Social Value Research are launching an initiative to establish a global standard measurement system for quantifying the social utility of AI and ICT technologies. Through an MOU, the three parties plan to visualize socially beneficial contributions that are difficult to monetize—such as support for vulnerable populations and disaster response—through objective indicators, and jointly develop standard methodologies applicable across various industries.
