Korea Institute of Materials Science Discusses Failure Cases and Analysis Technologies in Defense, Automotive, Shipbuilding, and Power Generation Sectors
Materials and Components Failure Analysis Workshop Shares AI and Industrial CT Application Cases
The Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) held a specialized workshop to analyze the causes of materials and components failures occurring in industrial sites and share measures to prevent recurrence.
The Korea Institute of Materials Science announced that it held the "21st Materials and Components Failure Analysis Workshop" at its headquarters in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, from August 13 to 14.
The event was organized for experts from industry, academia, and research institutions to share materials and components failure cases, cause analysis technologies, and prevention measures, and to enhance product reliability and industrial equipment safety.
Materials and components are considered key elements of major industries including automotive, shipbuilding, power generation and energy, and defense industries. The importance of failure analysis is growing as manufacturing process defects or cracks, corrosion, and damage occurring during use can lead to shortened product life, safety accidents, and economic losses.
The Korea Institute of Materials Science's Materials and Components Failure Analysis Center (FACE) plays a role in analyzing failure cases from industry and providing support for recurrence prevention measures.
At this workshop, presentations included △ultra-high-speed penetration failure behavior of steel materials for armor plate △failure cause analysis and report automation based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) and large language models (LLM) △non-destructive failure analysis based on industrial CT △corrosion and adhesion failure analysis cases, and others.
Additionally, actual failure cases from the defense, power generation, automotive, and shipbuilding sectors along with the latest analysis technologies were introduced.
On the second day, various research results were shared including △effects on creep life of heat-resistant steel △failure cause analysis and reliability testing of military equipment △automotive steering device failure cases △ship anchor chain link damage causes △corrosion behavior of magnesium materials, and others.
Participants discussed failure cases occurring in industrial sites and measures to improve product reliability and equipment safety.
Choi Chul-jin, President of the Korea Institute of Materials Science, said, "Even small damage to materials and components can lead to equipment shutdown, economic losses, and safety accidents. Accurate cause identification and sharing of recurrence prevention technologies are important."
