Up to 4 times faster than HDD and capable of processing 4K UHD video

Samsung Electronics unveils the new 'T3', a high-performance, high-capacity portable SSD (Solid State Drive) based on 3rd generation V-NAND, and sets out to expand the external SSD market in earnest. The 'T3' will be unveiled for the first time at 'CES 2016', the world's largest consumer electronics show, which opens in Las Vegas, USA on the 6th, and is scheduled to be released sequentially in 50 countries around the world, including Korea, the United States, China, and Germany, starting this coming February.

Portable SSDs are a new concept of external storage devices that became known when Samsung Electronics launched its first portable SSD, the 'T1', last January. They are characterized by significantly improved speed and stability compared to existing external HDDs (Hard Disk Drives).

Samsung Electronics announced that the 'T3' will be released in four capacities: 250 gigabytes (GB), 500 gigabytes, 1 terabyte (TB), and 2 terabytes, and that it achieves read and write speeds of 450 MB/s, which is up to four times faster than an HDD, allowing it to freely process high-capacity ultra-high-resolution 4K UHD video data.

In particular, the 2 terabyte (TB) model has a large capacity capable of storing about 400 Full HD movies, further enhancing user convenience. It is expected to be a good choice for professionals such as designers and photographers, as well as users who want to safely store large amounts of data.

You can use it with peace of mind thanks to the shock-resistant frame and overheating protection function.

The 'T3' features a sophisticated premium design with a gray-toned metal case, is the size of a business card, and weighs about 50 grams, which is lighter than the weight of 10 100-won coins. In addition, it features an impact-resistant frame that can withstand a fall from a height of 2 meters or being run over by a 5-ton truck, and is equipped with an overheat protection function that automatically regulates the temperature, allowing for safe use even in extreme environments. It also enhances security by incorporating a 256-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption engine.

The 'T3' features a USB 3.1 Type-C connector, enhancing convenience for users of the latest IT devices. Additionally, when a compatible cable is connected, it can be used like external memory on various devices that support USB data communication, such as smartphones, tablet PCs, and smart TVs.

“Last year, the 1 terabyte ‘T1’ product received high consumer interest and led the growth of the portable SSD market,” said Kim Un-soo, Executive Vice President of Brand Product Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics’ Memory Business Division. “This year, we expect the ‘T3’ to further expand the high-capacity SSD market by significantly broadening the application areas of portable SSDs to include not only PCs but also smartphones and TVs.”

Meanwhile, following the launch of its 3rd-generation V-NAND (48-layer)-based consumer SSD lineup last September to secure product competitiveness, Samsung Electronics plans to further strengthen its leadership in the consumer SSD market by continuously expanding its high-performance, high-capacity SSD lineup using differentiated proprietary technologies.
