Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP) today announced the availability of the 2D/3D Touch and Gesture Development Kit (DV102014), the industry's first development kit to integrate 2D projective capacitive touch (PCAP) and 3D gesture recognition into a display. The development kit provides developers easy access to Microchip's patented 2D and 3D GestIC® sensing technology, enabling them to easily integrate 2D multi-touch and 3D hand gesture recognition into their display applications. The kit utilizes electric-field-based technology to track hand and finger gestures both on the display surface and at distances up to 20 cm. The development kit is also ready to use out of the box, requiring no code development for ease of use. Parameterization, diagnostics and option configuration are performed via the freely downloadable Aurea 2.0 graphical user interface (GUI).

This 2D/3D Touch and Gesture Development Kit features Microchip's latest PCAP controller, the MTCH6303, and the MGC3130 3D gesture controller. It also features an integrated 8-inch transparent touch sensor, enabling rapid prototyping for a wide range of displays. The MTCH6303 provides multi-touch coordinates with a five-finger scan rate of 100 Hz. It also includes a multi-finger surface gesture suite, making it ideal for applications driven by an operating system (OS) as well as embedded systems without an operating system.

The MGC3130, featuring Microchip's award-winning GestIC technology, is the first electric-field-based 3D gesture controller to provide low-power, precise, and robust hand position tracking at 200 Hz. GestIC technology utilizes advanced Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) to ensure 3D hand gesture recognition rates exceeding 95%. Free-space hand gestures are universal, hygienic, and easy to learn, making them ideal for display applications.
