Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication and accident prevention and traffic flow improvement

NXP Semiconductors announced its participation in the U.S. Department of Transportation's Smart City Challenge as a provider of V2X technology. NXP will provide vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) to selected cities to help prevent accidents and improve traffic flow. This will enable vehicles more than a mile apart to securely exchange data, such as emergency alerts.

The Smart City Challenge is a competition for mid-sized American cities to evaluate ideas for developing future connected cities and solving transportation infrastructure problems related to population growth, with the winning city receiving a $50 million prize from the Department of Transportation and its partners. Additionally, the selected cities will receive access to NXP’s advanced technologies, such as V2X systems, designed to significantly improve the future of transportation, as part of a collaboration between NXP and the Ministry of Transport.

NXP's V2X RoadLINK™ module is the technology being provided to the winning city of this competition. V2X RoadLINK allows drivers to "see" ahead of traffic obstacles, such as corners or large trucks. It also allows cars to "talk" to traffic lights and give priority to emergency vehicles, truck convoys, buses, and other priority vehicles. Furthermore, RoadLINK is protected against unauthorized attacks using NXP's V2X hardware security technology.

NXP's RoadLINK™ technology module includes firmware from NXP's partner Cohda, which efficiently runs V2X software on NXP's i.MX 6Solo applications processor. NXP technology is expected to hit the road later this year in prototypes from major automakers.
