Bluetooth SIG Releases Assistance Toolkit for Internet Gateway Development for Bluetooth® Sensors

Bluetooth SIG announced an architecture to connect the Internet of Things and billions of devices.

At the presentation, Steve Hegenderfer, Director of Developer Programs at Bluetooth SIG , gave a presentation on the latest Bluetooth trends and Bluetooth Mesh, along with product demonstrations by member companies.

In particular, the Bluetooth SIG predicted that a new architecture for Bluetooth Internet Gateways, which extends monitoring and control capabilities for Bluetooth-based sensor devices to the Internet cloud and enables data access from anywhere, will further accelerate the spread of the Internet of Things in the future.

The Bluetooth SIG recently introduced a new architecture and an educational toolkit to aid in the rapid development of internet gateways for Bluetooth® products. Bluetooth gateways enable data transmission and transport between Bluetooth sensors and cloud data centers.

In addition, this architecture expands the potential of the Internet of Things by enabling remote monitoring and control of Bluetooth sensors, such as turning lights on or off in the house or opening the door to visitors even when you are away.

Furthermore, the use of a new architecture and supporting tools for Bluetooth Internet Gateways enables a direct connection between Bluetooth devices and the Internet cloud without the need for smartphones or tablets, thereby enhancing user convenience. Since this communication capability allows for sensor control regardless of range, it can be considered an indispensable element for the expansion and implementation of the Internet of Things.

"We are hearing demand for gateways not only from our member companies but also from general consumers who want a 'connected home' but are not satisfied with current systems," said Steve Hejenderfer, Director. "Today, the majority of people want to monitor their home security systems not only from the sofa in their living room but also from their office."

In addition, "the new architecture of the Bluetooth internet gateway provides the standards necessary for developers to implement the gateway's functions. “With this, devices that are always powered on and connected to the network inside the house, such as routers, thermostats, and security systems, can now control various sensors and transmit data from them to the internet cloud, enabling home management from anywhere,” he said.

The newly announced architecture will provide direct assistance and more opportunities to 'smart home' developers looking to create hubs that connect all sensors in the house or integrate internet gateway functions into existing products.
