User authentication is possible on mobile phones using fingerprint, iris, face, and voice recognition.
Plans to apply it to non-face-to-face financial authentication and login, mobile phone payments, etc. starting in the second half of the year.

KT (Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu) announced on the 6th that it has obtained FIDO (Fast Identity Online) certification, an international standard for biometric authentication.

FIDO is an authentication method that utilizes biometric technology in an online environment. It is characterized by being able to quickly and accurately authenticate users through fingerprint, iris, face, and voice recognition without having to enter complex passwords. It is issued a certificate by the FIDO Alliance (see materials below).

In particular, FIDO is a technology used by leading domestic and international simple payment services such as PayPal, Alipay, and Samsung Pay. Rather than storing and using the biometric information as is, it enhances security by creating a new form of authentication information through an encryption stage to protect the user's personal information.

KT participated in the interoperability test hosted by the FIDO Alliance in March and was certified and verified for compliance with the FIDO standard in all areas, including servers (Server), clients (iOS/Android), and authentication devices (Authenticator/ASM).

This has laid the foundation for a rapid response to the next-generation authentication market, which requires a safer and simpler solution than existing authentication methods. Additionally, by ensuring compatibility with excellent domestic and international solutions and services that have obtained FIDO certification, we have been able to increase trust in the new authentication service currently being prepared.

Starting in the second half of the year, KT plans to offer a new authentication method that incorporates FIDO technology to customers who use non-face-to-face authentication, login, and payment in the financial sector.

KT’s Executive Director of Convergence Service Development, Choi Jeong-yoon, said, “We developed FIDO authentication technology so that KT customers can use services more safely and conveniently in the fintech era,” and added, “Following the app-based authentication device that was certified this time, we plan to additionally develop a FIDO authentication device that utilizes USIM, a secure storage medium in mobile phones, for the first time in Korea within the first half of the year and obtain FIDO certification.”
