Configuration of an immersive 5G Olympics based on a perfect network infrastructure
Showcasing lifestyle-oriented IoT technologies such as GiGA IoT Home Manager, health bands, and exercise bikes

KT is participating in 'WORLD IT SHOW 2016 (hereinafter WIS 2016)', the largest domestic information and communications exhibition held at COEX in Seoul for four days from the 17th to the 20th, and is operating an exhibition booth under the theme of 'Meeting the 5G Olympics in Advance Based on a Perfect Network'.

At this exhibition, KT has organized its exhibition hall into three zones: Perfect Network, Preview of the 5G Olympics, and Smart IoT, showcasing the latest network technology connecting land, sea, air, and space, a 5G Olympics experience through VR, and IoT technology that enables a smart life.

In the 'Perfect Network' zone located in the center of the exhibition hall, 'Drone LTE,' 'Backpack LTE,' 'Maritime LTE,' and 'Satellite LTE' technologies are demonstrated through models to enable rapid communication network configuration in disaster situations. Additionally, it introduces how various 5G technology-based services are implemented, including a 25Gbps speed demonstration.


In particular, the commercial version of the network-based security platform 'Wizstick' is being unveiled for the first time. Along with an enterprise-only LTE service that enhances security with intelligent network technology, this personal security device blocks external hacking threats when plugged into a PC or laptop like a USB and provides secure accredited certificate management functions through fingerprint recognition.

The '5G Olympics' zone is composed of experiential items so that customers can directly experience various network-based technological elements, and has expanded the range of content available for experience through HMDs (Head Mounted Displays), including ski jumping, which gained great popularity at MWC 2016 (Mobile World Congress) last February by incorporating VR technology, as well as bobsleigh, music videos, and Olleh TV Mobile.

At the Time Slice corner located at the entrance of the exhibition hall, visitors can experience videos of themselves filmed from various angles alongside music videos on large displays and smartphones.

Time slice is a special filming technique that displays the instantaneous movement of a subject three-dimensionally from various spaces and angles. If applied to sports, this allows for viewing the dynamic movements of baseball or figure skaters from various angles, and is expected to significantly contribute to resolving judging controversies in speed-sensitive disciplines such as short track speed skating.

The 'Smart IoT' zone showcases GiGA IoT home services that can be implemented based on 'LTE-M,' a global standard network technology specialized for the Internet of Things, and IoT Makers, an open IoT platform.

GiGA IoT Home Manager is a service that allows users to check the status of household IoT devices via a smartphone application, enabling remote management of various home IoT devices such as smart plugs, gas safety devices, window open detectors, digital door locks, air purifiers, and robot vacuum cleaners.

The GiGA IoT Health Band was developed in collaboration with national fitness trainer Sean Lee, allowing users to receive PT (Personal Training) while watching Sean Lee's videos on Olleh TV. The GiGA IoT Health Bike is linked with Olleh TV, and the pedal intensity is adjusted in real-time according to road conditions or gradients while riding, providing users with an experience similar to exercising in an actual riding environment.

“KT has showcased the world’s best new IT technologies to visitors every year at WIS, the largest IT festival in Korea,” said Yoon Jong-jin, Executive Vice President and Head of Public Relations at KT. “This year, we will present a blueprint for Gigatopia, including a 5G Olympics that can be experienced based on a perfect network infrastructure.”

Meanwhile, KT is South Korea's representative 'international event organizing telecommunications company,' having hosted the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, and the 2011 Daegu World Championships. To ensure the smooth running of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, plans are underway to install 35,000 wired communication lines based on 1,391 km of communication conduits being built in the PyeongChang region and to construct a wireless communication network capable of accommodating up to 250,000 terminals simultaneously.
