6.25mm x 9mm BGA package provided

Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-kwak) announced the release of the µModule® (Power Module) step-down regulator (product name: LTM8053) with a maximum input of 40V (absolute rating 42V). This product can safely operate with poorly regulated or highly variable 12V to 36V input power in noisy environments such as industrial robots, factory automation, and aviation systems.

The LTM8053 integrates a switching regulator controller, power switch, inductor, and other supporting components into a 6.25mm x 9mm x 3.32mm BGA package. Since it requires only two external capacitors and two resistors, the LTM8053 solution size is only about 150mm². Alternative solutions require up to 250mm² in size and roughly twice the number of external components.

The LTM8053 provides a continuous (6A peak) output current of 3.5A, and the SHARE pin enables current sharing, supporting operation to deliver more current in parallel. The output voltage can be adjusted by a single resistor within the range of 0.97V to 15V. The wide output voltage range provides versatility. Thus, a single device generates common system bus voltages of 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and 15V. The efficiency is 90% at 12VIN, 5VOUT. The LTM8053 provides an output current of 3.5A at an ambient temperature of up to 85°C (12VIN ~ 5VOUT) without a heat sink or airflow.
