Signed an agreement with China Telecom to expand Korea-China data business cooperation

KT (Chairman Hwang Chang-kyu) announced that it will participate in the 'Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2016 (hereinafter MWC Shanghai 2016)', Asia's largest mobile telecommunications exhibition, which will be held in Shanghai, China for three days from June 29 to July 1.

MWC Shanghai, organized by the GSMA, the global mobile communications association, first started in Shanghai in 2012 and is now in its fifth year. It has established itself as the largest mobile exhibition in Asia, with over 550 companies participating and more than 40,000 visitors from 101 countries attending last year.

The theme of MWC Shanghai 2016 is 'Mobile is Me', with approximately 1,000 companies participating. KT is participating in the joint booth 'Innovation City' to introduce technologies such as mmWave (5G), GiGA IoT, GiGA VR, and safety drone. In addition, to support the global expansion of K-Champ startups nurtured by KT and the Creative Economy Innovation Center, items from three companies, including esmlab, misconct, and springwave, will also be exhibited.

Introduction to the latest IT technologies such as IoT and VR

First, in the 'mmWave' corner, we introduce millimeter wave-based 5G technology that uses hundreds of integrated antennas and ultra-wideband to achieve transmission speeds more than 60 times faster than existing LTE.

The 'GiGA IoT' section showcases COWAY's 'Smart AirCare Service,' which operates on the open IoT platform GiGA IoT Makers. It notifies users of indoor and outdoor air quality status via smartphone and helps maintain clean indoor air by recommending ventilation or activating the air purification function depending on the situation.

The 'GiGA VR' corner will showcase new K-POP and movie content, along with virtual reality experiences of winter sports such as ski jumping and ice hockey, which were very popular with visitors at WIS 2016 last May. Through an HMD (Head-mounted Display), visitors can experience the sensation of a famous singer or actor actually being right in front of their eyes.

The 'Safety Drone' section introduces intelligent facial recognition technology set to play a key role at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics by analyzing visitors' faces via cameras mounted on drones and displaying personal information, such as distinguishing between authorized and unauthorized users. Along with this, it also introduces Satellite LTE, Drone LTE, and Backpack LTE, which can be utilized in disaster situations.

Signed MOU with China Telecom to expand data business cooperation

Following the 2015 event, KT is deploying GiGA Wire technology at the 2016 MWC Shanghai venue to provide WiFi services within the venue.

GiGA Wire, which KT commercialized for the first time in the world, is a telephone line-based internet transmission technology that can achieve gigabit speeds of up to 600 Mbps, which is more than three times faster than VDSL, without replacing copper wires already installed in buildings with optical cables, and will be used as a key technology to provide GiGA WiFi at MWC Shanghai 2016.

WiFi services will be provided to visitors and exhibitors during the event and will be operated by the main telecommunications operator, China Mobile. Based on this experience, KT plans to actively pursue the development of the global telecommunications market in the future.

Meanwhile, KT announced on the 28th that it signed a partnership agreement with China Telecom, China's No. 1 wired telecommunications operator, to expand cooperation in Korea-China global telecommunications data business at the Mobile World Congress 2016 (GSMA/MWC 2016), the world's largest mobile telecommunications exhibition held in Shanghai, China.

Through this partnership, the two companies plan to leverage their telecommunications infrastructure, including the submarine cable networks between Korea and China, to expand into differentiated, needs-based international dedicated lines, IDCs, and infrastructure services, thereby providing customer-friendly services to corporate clients entering the Chinese market.
In addition, both companies have decided to expand their areas of cooperation beyond this global data service collaboration.

Earlier last May, KT and China Telecom launched a Korea-China internet service, and through the signing of this agreement, the scope of service cooperation is expected to expand to include corporate customers and internet service providers.
