Infineon Technologies (Korea CEO Seung-soo Lee) announced that it is officially sponsoring the Intelligent Model Car Competition organized by Hanyang University’s Future Automotive Research Institute and the Department of Future Automotive Engineering. The 2016 Intelligent Model Car Competition will be held on July 14 at the Hanyang University Olympic Gymnasium, with approximately 350 students from 100 teams representing over 50 universities nationwide participating.

Through the Intelligent Model Car Competition hosted by Hanyang University, a leader in automotive engineering, students can gain experience in directly implementing autonomous vehicles by designing the embedded control system, a core technology of autonomous vehicles, themselves.” "Infineon, the largest supplier of automotive semiconductors in the Korean market, will continue to sponsor the Intelligent Model Car Competition to foster high-skilled technical talent and, consequently, contribute to enhancing the technological competitiveness of the Korean automotive industry," he said.

The participating university students built a model car to enter the competition by applying environmental perception, control algorithm design, and motor control technology using a board composed of Infineon’s 32-bit multicore microcontroller unit (MCU) AURIX™ and a motor driver IC.

The competition is conducted by dividing all participating teams into two groups to complete the track, and then selecting the top 20 teams to compete in the finals. The rankings of the finalist teams will be determined by combining not only driving records but also the results of missions involving future automotive technologies, such as 'Speed Control Zone,' 'Obstacle Avoidance,' 'Lane Keeping Control,' and 'Autonomous Emergency Braking.'

The winning team of this year's intelligent model car competition will receive the Infineon Grand Prize with a cash prize of 10 million won, and the team that wins the Infineon Special Prize will have the opportunity to visit the Infineon Technologies headquarters in Munich, Germany from August 8 to 12 to learn about eco-friendly and autonomous driving control technologies and tour the state-of-the-art production facility in Regensburg, Germany.

According to a report by market research firm Strategy Analytics (April 2016), Infineon was the largest supplier in the Korean automotive semiconductor market, including semiconductor sensors, in 2015 (with a market share of 13.4%), and ranked second in the world with a market share of 10.4% in the $27 billion global automotive semiconductor market.
