Knus Plans to Expand Installation at Highway Rest Areas Nationwide

Konus (CEO Park Chang-sik), a company specializing in IoT smart energy-saving systems, secured a contract from the Korea Expressway Corporation and completed the installation of IoT smart restrooms at locations including the Munmak Rest Area on the Yeongdong Expressway, Seomjingang Rest Area, and Manghyang Rest Area.

Knus's IoT smart restroom is a system based on wireless human detection technology that accurately identifies the occupancy of each stall and displays the status on the entrance and the door of each stall. Occupancy is indicated by a Digital Information Display (DID) and LEDs. This sensor-based system is the first of its kind in Korea, and a patent has recently been filed.

By enabling accurate determination of whether individual stalls are occupied from the entrance of the restroom, it is expected that not only user convenience but also the efficiency of tasks such as cleaning and repairs for managers will be significantly improved.

The system applied to the IoT smart toilet consists of a wireless sensing sensor (SDS, Smart Direction Sensor) that detects whether a user is present inside the stall, an indicator that displays usage status via an LED, a coordinator (SCN, Smart Coordinater) that receives data from the sensor and transmits it to the screen, and a digital information display (DID) which is a monitoring device.

Meanwhile, on Friday the 22nd, the Korea Expressway Corporation held an opening ceremony for the premium restroom at the Manghyang Rest Area on the Gyeongbu Expressway, attended by the president, members of the National Assembly, and the head of the Restroom Association. Kim Hak-song, President of the Korea Expressway Corporation, announced plans to "carry out phased remodeling of restrooms at 182 expressway rest areas nationwide to promote innovation in restroom culture."

Park Chang-sik, CEO of Konus, said, “We are pleased that our technology is playing a pivotal role in the nationwide highway rest area restroom facility improvement project,” adding, “Taking this project as an opportunity, we will expand the scope of our technology’s application so that it can be utilized in a wider variety of spaces.”
