Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest smartwatch, the 'Gear S3,' on the 31st (local time) at the Tempodrom in Berlin, Germany, in the presence of over 1,500 media and partners.

The Gear S3, presented in two models—the 'Frontier' suitable for outdoor activities and an active lifestyle, and the luxurious 'Classic'—is meticulously designed with a stainless steel body that maximizes the feel of a traditional watch.

The 'Gear S3' enhances usability with features that allow it to be used independently without a smartphone, such as GPS, a built-in speaker, altitude and barometric pressure readings, and a speedometer. In particular, the 'Frontier' model also introduces a separate LTE version that enables calls without a smartphone.

"Samsung Electronics has strived to capture the true 'watch-like' essence that has moved people's hearts for a long time in the Gear S3," said Lee Young-hee, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Wireless Business Division. "As it is a wearable smartwatch with advanced features that embodies the original design and sensibility of a watch, I believe it will be loved by many consumers."

The 'Gear S3' Frontier features a body constructed by utilizing the unique properties of stainless steel, and the oval buttons' touch points are precisely finished with polyurethane. The watch strap is made of moisture-resistant and durable silicone material, considering its use in frequent outdoor activities.

The 'Gear S3' Classic, featuring laser-engraved markings on the circular wheel like a luxury watch, uses stainless steel buttons to create a sense of unity with the body and features a watch strap that highlights the texture of leather.

The 'Gear S3' also took into account various small but significant elements that greatly influence the watch design, such as finishing the sides of the body with a hairline finish and highlighting the metallic luster on the top.
In addition, it features a standard 22mm watch strap that can be replaced to suit individual preferences and supports IP68 water and dust resistance.

The Gear S3 is the first to feature Corning's latest wearable-specific glass, Gorilla Glass® SR+, delivering a scratch-resistant yet vivid display. Additionally, the Gear S3 incorporates an "Always-On Display," allowing users to view the watch face at any time on a Super AMOLED display that supports 16 million colors.

Samsung Electronics has equipped the 'Gear S3' with various features that allow it to be used independently even without a smartphone. With its GPS, altitude and barometric pressure sensors, and speedometer, the 'Gear S3' can be effectively utilized for various leisure activities as well as fitness.

The UX has also been improved, allowing users to answer calls by rotating a circular wheel located on the bezel, whereas previously, users answered calls by tapping, touching, or swiping the screen. The Gear S3 allows users to write text or draw pictures directly on the circular display to convert messages into text. In addition, by utilizing the 'Reminder' feature, users can easily and quickly register essential tasks they must not forget in their busy daily lives and receive notifications.

In the event of an emergency, users can send an SOS by pressing the button three times, even without a smartphone, or track their current location to notify pre-registered family or friends. Plans are underway to utilize the SOS function through partnerships with ADT in the U.S. and S1 in Korea.

Use for up to 4 days on a single charge

The Gear S3 is equipped with Samsung Pay, which allows for easy mobile payments anytime, anywhere. In particular, compared to the Gear S2, which only used NFC (Near Field Communication), it also supports MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission), significantly improving versatility.

'Gear S3' users can utilize a variety of applications such as fitness, music, news, and travel, and can also download various watch faces to customize the look depending on the situation. There are approximately 10,000 applications available for the 'Gear S3'. Through collaboration with BMW, the 'Gear S3' allows users to check the vehicle's fuel status and remotely control functions such as temperature adjustment from outside using a dedicated application.

The 'Gear S3' can be used for up to 4 days on a single charge, and a separate version of the 'Gear S3' Frontier that supports LTE will also be released. The LTE version of Frontier allows you to make calls or listen to streaming music and voice messages by connecting the built-in speaker or a Bluetooth headset, even without being connected to a smartphone.
