Samsung Electronics will hold the 'Samsung Open Source Conference (SOSCON)' for two days on the 17th and 18th at the Samsung Electronics Seoul R&D Campus located in Umyeon-dong.

The Samsung Open Source Conference, now in its third year, is Korea's largest open source conference, with over 1,000 developers participating each year. This year, for the first time, the event will be held at Samsung Electronics' Seoul R&D Campus, the center of software and design, inviting software developers.

On the first day of the conference, the 17th, the event began with a welcoming address by Vice President Seunghwan Cho of Samsung Electronics' Software Center, followed by keynote speakers from global leaders in the open source industry, including Vice President Hyogun Lee and Managing Director Youngyoon Kim of the Software Center, Brian Behlendorf, founder of the Apache Software Foundation, and Younggeun Kim, the first Korean director of the Python Software Foundation.

They presented key technology prospects such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and platforms, as well as the value of collaboration and sharing through open source.

In particular, this year's keynote speech focused the attention of the developers in attendance by announcing key strategies for the new leap forward and growth of the Tizen platform, such as the introduction of .NET to Tizen through technical collaboration with Microsoft and the open-source release of 'Tizen RT', a lightweight OS (Operating System) for low-spec devices such as washing machines and air conditioners.

With over 2,000 registered participants, the pre-registration for this event closed early due to the high interest of developers. The event featured technical sessions on a variety of topics covering the present and future of the open source industry, including the Internet of Things, platforms, big data/cloud, web, and machine learning.

Additionally, Samsung Electronics' home appliance hackathon event, which is themed on the future smart home, will feature unique service ideas for the 'Family Hub' refrigerator equipped with Internet of Things functions. To achieve this, participants will compete in a fierce two-day, non-stop race.

Samsung Electronics Vice President Cho Seung-hwan said, "In order for Samsung Electronics to establish itself as a software-centric company, technological innovation through open collaboration based on open source is important," and added, "I expect this event to serve not only as a forum for communication among open source developers, but also as a foundation for building a domestic open source ecosystem."
