SK Telecom announced on the 7th that it signed an MoU with the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation (KESCO) to reduce electrical fires by utilizing the IoT-dedicated network 'LoRa' and to discover a convergence business model based on electrical safety data.
The core of the MoU between the two companies is the establishment of a 'new electrical safety management system' that will help citizens use electricity safely by minimizing electrical fires and electric shock accidents through the management of electrical facilities via an IoT network.
To this end, we will establish a remote monitoring system, build an intelligent electrical fire prediction and prevention management system, and collaborate on IoT technology to improve the electrical safety environment for vulnerable households.
In particular, both sides believe that installing IoT modules in distribution panels, commonly referred to as toad houses, will be of great help in preventing electrical safety accidents, as they can be monitored in real time at control centers when overvoltage or overcurrent occurs.
SK Telecom and KESCO will first develop monitoring equipment equipped with IoT modules by March of this year and install them on 200 general electrical equipment in the Ulsan area and then on Jeonju Traditional Market for pilot operation.
Additionally, both parties agreed to explore ways to advance into the global market in the future. To this end, the company plans to develop a new convergence business model by converting the collected electrical safety data into big data.
SK Telecom IoT Business Division Head Cha In-hyeok said, “By utilizing SK Telecom’s ICT technologies, such as IoT and big data, we can now help improve the safety environment in the electricity sector, which is a public good,” and “We will also strive to strengthen the global competitiveness of ICT by jointly entering the domestic and international businesses of the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation with specialized companies.”
