Responding to the market based on Gainspan's low-power Wi-Fi technology

Telit announced that it has acquired GainSpan Corporation, a wireless connectivity solutions provider specializing in the design and development of low-power Wi-Fi technologies.

Gainspan is a specialized company that manufactures and commercializes IoT chips and modules. It supplies specialized products and technologies related to embedded software IP, including battery-powered devices, network stacks, and application reference designs.

"As the IoT business matures, various forms of IoT are emerging, such as the Internet of Sensors, the Internet of Cars, and the Internet of Digital," said Telit CEO Uzi Katz. "In this context, the ability to ensure wireless connectivity will become a key growth driver for almost all players in the IoT market, without exception."

According to a September 2016 IoT forecast by Machina Research, a specialized IoT market research firm, there will be approximately 27 billion IoT connections by 2025, and 75% of these are expected to be short-range communications consisting of various types of Wi-Fi. Because Wi-Fi is a technology optimized for battery-powered IoT applications due to its low power consumption.

The acquisition of Gainspan expands Telit's end-to-end IoT solutions portfolio and enables it to address the growing demand for battery-powered devices based on Wi-Fi and low-power technologies.

Gainspan's technology and assets are seamlessly integrated into Telit's existing products, including cellular, BT/BLE, and GNSS modules, forming the foundation for IoT connectivity and platform services for Telit's "sensor-to-cloud" solution strategy. Gainspan's low-power Wi-Fi technology, combined with its low standby current and fast wake-up times, extends device battery life. Furthermore, Gainspan's IP allows applications to be stripped of Wi-Fi services and network functions, allowing customers to design devices with simple, cost-effective MCUs or even without them.
