The first pitcher to appear in a 5G connected car, the 'T5'

5G is leaving the lab and heading to the baseball field. SK Telecom has established a 5G testbed at Incheon SK Happy Dream Stadium (hereafter SK Stadium) and will demonstrate the 5G stadium for three days, from the opening ceremony on the 31st to the 2nd of next month. The 5G network will utilize the 28GHz ultra-high frequency band from four base stations installed within the stadium, transmitting at speeds of 20Gbps.

5G applications will be deployed throughout the stadium. The first pitcher will arrive in a 5G connected car, the "T5." Jointly developed by BMW Korea and SK Telecom, the T5 will connect to the 5G network and display ultra-high-definition, real-time video on the scoreboard. In the 360-degree live VR zone in the first base outfield, spectators can wear VR gear and observe the catcher, umpire, cheering section, dugout, VIP seats, and other areas of the stadium in real time. SK Wyverns' official app 'PLAY With' can be downloaded regardless of the carrier, and provides detailed statistics on batters and pitchers in real time through augmented reality (AR).



Additionally, in partnership with the augmented reality game "Pokemon GO," PokéStops and Pokémon Gyms will be installed throughout SK Stadium, both inside and outside. Events, including photo opportunities with Pokémon characters, will also be held.

Leaving the stadium, you can experience a 5G adventure at the 5G Theme Park. Measuring 70 meters wide and 40 meters tall, the park features virtual hang gliders, submarines, boats, and hot air balloons, along with bungee jumping and sky bridges to reach Treasure Island.


During this process, visitors will experience virtual reality VR using 5G technology, 'time slice' like movie special effects, 'interactive table' which is a futuristic display, VR walkthrough, etc. An SKT official said, “As this is a program that is continuously being updated, we plan to operate it on a trial basis only during the opening ceremony period, and we plan to introduce it to customers at various locations starting from SK Stadium.”

Park Jin-hyo, head of the Network Technology Institute, said, “5G is not simply about exceeding the speed of 4G, but rather about fastening a button to wear the clothes of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.” He added, “We will actively promote the results of the 5G Stadium construction overseas and contribute to Korea’s leadership in the global 5G standard.”
