Five C-Lab projects that combine IT and kids/beauty startups
The performance of startups from existing C-Lab is also gradually becoming visible.

Samsung Electronics will support the creation of five excellent startup projects this year through the spin-off system of C-Lab (Creative Lab), which is being promoted to spread a creative organizational culture.

Samsung has supported a total of 25 startups from C-Lab so far, including 9 in 2015 and 11 in 2016. The five projects that are launching as startups this time are attracting attention with ideas that apply IT technology to various living fields such as kids and beauty.

The five tasks are: △ Bebefit, a smart baby carrier that allows you to take care of your baby in a comfortable and smart way △ Chikapong, a smart toothbrush for infants that helps with brushing habits △ TagPlus, an IoT device for children that combines IT technology with toys △ S-Skin, a skin home care solution that performs analysis and care at the same time △ Lumini, a customized cosmetics recommendation solution through skin condition analysis.

The five projects have already attracted attention from the industry by being showcased to the global market through ABC Kids Expo 2016 and CES 2017. After the exhibition, we have been checking feedback from customers and external experts for several months to improve the perfection of our products and services, and now that we have become independent from Samsung Electronics, we are ready to start our business in earnest.

Meanwhile, since the second half of last year, the performance of startups from C-Lab has also become visible. SketchOn Inc. was recognized for its potential in December when it was selected as the first Korean startup to be included in the Top 4 at Slush2016, Europe's largest startup conference.

In addition, Salted Venture Co., Ltd., Innomdle Research Institute Co., Ltd., and Welt Co., Ltd., which attracted investment amounts that greatly exceeded their target amounts through the global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter in the second half of last year, are also preparing to launch their products soon.

Samsung Electronics Creative Development Center Managing Director Lee Jae-il said, “There are already 25 companies that have become independent startups through C-Lab, and the number of people hired externally by these companies has reached around 100,” adding, “Startups from C-Lab are growing rapidly and forming an ecosystem.”

C-Lab is an in-house venture incubation program that Samsung Electronics introduced in December 2012 to spread a creative organizational culture and discover creative ideas from employees. It actively supports excellent ideas regardless of the field.

Under the slogan, ‘Bebefit’ developed a smart baby carrier with two major functions: ‘Comfortable parents, happy babies.’ First, we applied a convertible hipseat structure that alleviates the pain felt by parents when wearing a baby carrier for a long time.

When you feel pain in your back, fold the hip seat to move the center of gravity to your shoulders, and when you feel pain in your shoulders, unfold the hip seat to move the center of gravity to your back. It’s a simple principle, but it’s an idea that greatly reduces the pain of parenting. The second key feature is the small macaron-shaped sensor. The sensor can be attached and detached from the baby carrier, and when attached, it can be used to monitor the baby’s urine and feces in real time, and when used alone, it can be used to manage the air quality around the baby.
'Chikapong' solved the small, everyday concern of "how can we get children to brush their teeth well on their own?" using IT technology.

We created a game with various characters that children like so that they can enjoy brushing their teeth, and attached a small sensor to the toothbrush that can check the child's motions and inform the parents of the areas where the teeth are brushed well and areas where they are lacking. Children can develop brushing habits in a fun way, and parents can help their children brush their teeth at the end through 'Chikapong's' dental report. In this way, 'Chikapong' is a smart solution that helps children develop healthy brushing habits.
'Tag Plus' is a 'One Click' IoT solution for children that helps them play with toys more enjoyably.

This solution connects toys and mobile devices with simple actions that children can easily follow, such as △ Click △ Shake △ Hold △ Bump, and it also teaches children how to assemble blocks that are difficult to make alone, and provides a new experience of enjoying block play in cooperation with friends.

'S-Skin' is a smart home care solution that simultaneously solves skin analysis and care and is largely composed of two parts.

The two products are a 'portable device' that measures and manages skin conditions and a 'micro needle patch' that delivers effective ingredients deep into the skin. The 'portable device' can measure skin moisture content, erythema, and melanin index, and even provides a function to manage the skin using LED light of a specific wavelength.

The 'micro needle patch' is a product that greatly increases the absorption rate of cosmetic ingredients, and it is eye-catching. In addition, the color of the patch changes depending on the temperature, so you can intuitively check whether it is well attached to the skin. 'S-Skin' is a convenient solution that allows you to easily manage your skin at home without time or cost constraints.
'LumiNi' is a product that analyzes your skin and even predicts invisible skin problems to recommend customized cosmetics.

It provides various information about your skin through a portable measuring device that fits in your hand and an analysis application. Just take a picture of your face with the device, and Lumini’s unique analysis algorithm will predict skin problems that are not visible on the outside, such as acne, freckles, wrinkles, pores, redness, and sebum.

In addition, it uses the chatbot function to comfortably converse with you like a friend and recommend care methods and cosmetics that are suitable for your skin condition. 'Lumi' was created to provide a truly personalized care solution based on data.
