SKT Begins Full-Scale 5G Equipment Introduction
Published2017.07.31 11:23SK Telecom announced that it has sent out a 5G RFP (Request for Proposal) to domestic and foreign 5G communication ICT partners to begin full-scale discussions on introducing 5G communication equipment.
The 5G RFP is a document outlining the requirements for the 5G commercial system envisioned by SK Telecom for the introduction of 5G communications equipment. ICT partners will submit bid proposals that reflect the detailed conditions of this RFP.
SK Telecom will select a bidder by the end of October after a three-month proposal submission and briefing session process. The company plans to engage in detailed discussions with the selected partners, including additional RFPs, to build a 5G commercial network.
The recently issued RFP outlines detailed technical and business requirements for SK Telecom's proposed 5G commercial equipment, including base stations, core equipment, and virtualized infrastructure. Specifically, it covers key technologies for 5G evolution, including: wireless transmission specifications and performance for each 5G frequency candidate band; virtualized core network technology; and interconnection between LTE and 5G networks.
SK Telecom explained that this RFP includes its network operation and design know-how, including the structure, form, and performance of SK Telecom's 5G system, designed based on 5G technology that is currently being discussed by international standards organizations such as 3GPP.
This 5G RFP is significant in that it marks the beginning of a full-scale review of the introduction of 5G commercial equipment. SK Telecom plans to prepare for 5G commercialization and work to ensure that the 5G technologies discussed with its partners are reflected in global 5G standardization bodies such as 3GPP and NGMN.
“Collaboration with various domestic and foreign companies is essential for the commercialization of 5G,” said Kang Jong-ryeol, head of SK Telecom’s infrastructure division. “Starting with this RFP distribution, we will solidify our leadership in 5G and accelerate commercialization to provide differentiated value to our customers.”

SKT to Commercialize 'Quantum Cryptography' That Cannot Be Broken Even by Supercomputers
소인수분해에 능한 퀀텀 컴퓨터(또는 양자컴퓨터)가 상용화되면 기존 암호체계가 붕괴된다는 우려의 목소리가 높았다. SK텔레콤은 23일 양자컴퓨터의 보안 솔루션으로 양자 난수 생성기(QRNG, Quantum Random Number Generator)와 양자 암호 통신 보안 시스템을 개발했다고 밝혔다. 기존 광통신은 무수히 많은 광자가 들어있어 일부 키가 도청되거나 복제돼도 알아챌 수 없어 해킹 위협이 높다. 퀀텀 컴퓨터가 개발되면 기존 암호체계가 붕괴 된다는 것도 이때문이다. 그런데 양자 암호키는 단일 광자다. A가 B에게 정보를 전달할 때, ‘정상적인 코스’의 전달을 제외하고는 의미 없는 정보가 된다. 중간에 해커가 개입해 정보를 측정하고 B에게 재전송할 경우 불확정성과 복제 불가능 원리로 해커는 정보를 얻을 수 없고, B는 오류가 증폭되어 도청 사실을 감지한다.

SKT, 학생들 IoT 아이디어 사업화 돕는다
사물인터넷을 활용한 기발한 아이디어를 찾기 위해 전국의 고등학생들과 대학생들이 한 자리에 모여 기존에 없던 새로운 서비스들을 선보이는 장이 열렸다. SK텔레콤은 지난 7월29일과 30일 양일간 이천 소재 SK텔레콤 인재개발원에서 기발하고 색다른 아이디어로 무장한 고등학생과 대학생들이 참가한 가운데 IoT를 활용한 다양한 제품들을 기획하고 개발해보는 ‘IoT 메이커톤(Make-A-thon)’ 대회를 개최했다고 밝혔다. 지난 3월 226개 팀이 참가했던 1차 서류심사와 5월 30개 팀이 경쟁을 펼쳤다. 이 중 프리젠테이션을 통과한 11개 팀(고교생팀 2, 대학생팀 9)이 참가해 최종 결승 라운드를 펼쳤다.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
