Public Institutions 'Moving Away from Windows to Open Source OS'

Accordingly, the Military Manpower Administration said that it was able to reduce license purchase costs and improve PC stability. This is because the military is still using an OS whose technology supply has been discontinued when utilizing military service assessment results, psychological tests, and military administrative data, which is vulnerable to security issues.

The Military Manpower Administration analyzed open OS suitable for psychological examination tests for the first time as a public institution to introduce open OS. The Ministry of Science and ICT and NIPA developed evaluation items in consultation with evaluation agencies for security review. As a result, Ubuntu based on Debian Linux was selected. It highly evaluated stable distribution release, user convenience, and stable operation in low-spec environments.
First, as a pilot project, we introduced open source OS to 300 units and replaced some old PCs. We plan to introduce a total of 1,600 units by 2019.

LH (Korea Land and Housing Corporation) has established an integrated spatial information operation environment based on open source software. The hardware was built using x86 servers to build a cloud environment, and the OS, GIS engine and tools, middleware, DBMS, etc. were replaced with open source software.
In addition, a spatial big data platform based on distributed parallel processing was also built, enabling the convergence and complex analysis and processing of massive data within the integrated operation environment. This cloud-based spatial information integrated operation environment can be used as an integrated infrastructure for spatial information systems and big data utilization, and in the mid to long term, it can be expanded and applied as an infrastructure for various spatial information utilization systems. Prior to construction, LH's spatial information integrated infrastructure was verified for its technology model and introduction feasibility by the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA).
Deposit Insurance Corporation fully supplies aging main computer open source software-based system
The Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation is a public financial institution established to protect depositors and maintain the stability of the financial system when depositors are unable to pay their deposits. In 2016 , it carried out an open source software conversion project and converted 81% of the entire business system to Linux-based open source software.
It was a project to replace an aging main computer. First, the Unix system was replaced with a Linux-based x86 system. As for software, the operating system and middleware were also replaced with open source software, as the existing business system was running on a Java-based IBM WebSphere environment.
In addition, business applications were built as a virtualized environment based on the KVM hypervisor. This is a countermeasure strategy to enable easy transition to a private cloud in the future. The Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation announced that the replacement resulted in a 43% reduction in TCO and a 51% reduction in average response speed.

[Issue] Open Source SW, If License Management Is Negligent, You Will Get a ‘Big Nose’ When Distributing
Recently, US software company Artifex Software filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Hangul and Computer for violation of open source license terms. The issue arose from embedding Artifex's Ghostscript in Hancom Office. Open source software is often thought to be free because developers can freely use, copy, modify, and redistribute the source code. However, open source software has openly available source code while still being protected as intellectual property (IP). When using open source, it is necessary to verify the extent to which it is "open." Open source has over 80 license obligations including source code disclosure requirements, copyright notice requirements, patent waiver requirements, and usage rights notification requirements. Among licenses certified by OSI, the organization that certifies open source licenses (copyrights), representative licenses include AL (Apache License), BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), GPL (General Public License), LGPL (Lesser General Public License), MIT, and MPL (Mozilla Public License). Even if the names are the same, the details of obligations vary depending on the version, so verification is essential.

Databricks Unveils Open AI Security Monitoring 'Lakewatch'
Databricks entered the security market on March 24 by unveiling LakeWatch, an open-source agentic SIEM. The core functionality of this product is to integrate and analyze security, IT, and business data in a single environment to support AI-based threat detection and investigation. The company explained that it reduces the limitations of existing security operations centers, which have had to forgo some data due to high cost structures, and enables large-scale data analysis and automation based on open formats and ecosystems. LakeWatch is currently offered as a private preview, with Adobe and Dropbox mentioned as early customers.
