The world's first robot-powered ski competition is taking place.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will host the 'Ski Robot Challenge' on February 12th at the Welli Hilli Park D+ Slope in Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do.

The Ski Robot Challenge simulates the giant slalom, an Alpine skiing event that tests downhill speed and turning technique. Rankings are determined by scores and times achieved after passing five gates. The competition is divided into an autonomous driving category, where robots navigate by recognizing the location of gates, and a remote control category, which tests the robot's mechanical capabilities.

Eight robots from Hanyang University, Myongji University, Kookmin University, Kyungpook National University, KAIST, Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Robot Convergence Research Institute, and Mini Robot are participating in the autonomous driving sector. Five robots from Hanyang University, Kookmin University, Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Robot Convergence Research Institute, and Mini Robot will participate in the remote control category.

This competition is expected to stimulate participants' desire to challenge themselves and promote technological development by reflecting the latest technological trends, such as intelligent humanoids and precision control, and selecting events linked to the Winter Olympics.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is also supporting the use of robots in stadiums, athlete villages, and press centers to ensure the successful hosting of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

A total of 85 robots of 11 types are scheduled to be used at the Olympics, including HUBO, the world's first robot to carry the Olympic torch, a robot that paints murals, and an ornamental fish robot that moves like a real fish.
