Will Samsung Electronics once again seize mobile supremacy at MWC 2018?
Published2018.02.26 01:12Samsung Electronics, which had to face an unprecedented situation in 2017 when the Galaxy Note 7 battery issue failed to launch and the launch of the Galaxy S8 was delayed, not to mention MWC 2017, is preparing for a large-scale market entry at MWC 2018 with the Galaxy S9, which focuses on a connected life based on IoT and AI.
Above all, the Unpacked event to be held on the 25th, a day before MWC, at Fira Barcelona Montjuïc, is expected to feature Samsung's previously announced FULL HD 480fps or higher high-speed shooting technology and augmented reality (AR) demonstrations, as revealed in the event invitation. The entire event will be broadcasted live on the 25th as a 360-degree video through SNS.
Samsung Electronics, which is decorating half of its MWC booth with demonstrations and experience zones for the S9, plans to apply 'Bixby' to mobile devices, home appliances, and battlefields through this MWC, and to apply it to real life by linking it with the SmartThings app, a cloud for IoT services.
In addition to this, it will be designed to allow users to experience 4D virtual reality using VR, as well as winter Olympic sports such as snowboarding and alpine skiing, through Gear VR and Gear Sports.
Samsung Electronics, which served as a pilot service provider for the PyeongChang Olympics in the field of 5G technology, announced the world's first 28GHz 5G FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) at this MWC. We are unveiling our fixed wireless communication (CPE), home terminal (CPE), base station (AU), and next-generation core commercial products.
Samsung Electronics will once again demonstrate its presence in the mobile sector by showcasing various application service models, including cloud gaming utilizing ultra-low latency communication, ultra-high-speed mobile communication services in stadiums with tens of thousands of spectators, and new 5G technologies such as 5G connected cars and smart cities.

KT, Samsung Electronics, and Qualcomm Successfully Launch 5G Data Communications Based on International Standards
KT는 삼성전자-퀄컴과 함께 경기도 수원 삼성전자 디지털 시티에서 3GPP의 5G 국제 표준인 5G NR(New Radio) 규격 기반으로 데이터 통신에 성공했다고 밝혔다. 이번에 3사가 협력한 시연 내용은 2월 26일부터 스페인 바르셀로나에서 열리는 MWC2018에서 3사 부스에 전시될 예정이다. 이날 시연에선 초고속 5G 데이터 통신과 1ms 수준의 초저지연성을 검증하였다. 이러한 성능은 VR/AR, 실시간 게이밍, 스마트 팩토리, 자율주행차 등 대용량 데이터 전송과 빠른 응답속도가 필요한 미래 5G 서비스에 필수적이다.

Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm Partner to Produce 5G Chips Based on 7nm Foundry Process
Samsung Electronics has decided to cooperate with Qualcomm on 5G chip production based on the 7-nanometer foundry process (7LPP, Low Power Plus). Samsung Electronics plans to apply EUV (Extreme Ultra Violet), the next-generation lithography equipment, starting from the 7-nanometer process, and Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm have decided to expand their cooperative relationship to 7-nanometer following their collaboration on 14-nanometer/10-nanometer processes. Samsung Electronics is actively adopting EUV technology, including unveiling a 7-nanometer foundry process incorporating EUV lithography technology last May, and plans to continue overcoming the limits of ultra-fine processes to solidify its technological leadership.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
