LG Uplus and Gyeongbuk Fire Department to Create a Safe Korea
Remote management of fire hydrant status equipped with NB-IoT module

LG Uplus announced that it is developing and providing intelligent fire hydrants based on NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) in cooperation with the Gyeongbuk Fire Department.

LG Uplus equips fire hydrants installed on main roads and densely populated residential areas with NB-IoT communication modules, and sends information on the leakage status, freezing status, and water pressure of the fire hydrants to the fire department control center via its dedicated NB-IoT network.

The introduction of intelligent fire hydrants has made it possible to prevent the loss of manpower, time, and costs associated with traditional on-site inspections. With the availability of NB-IoT remote monitoring, the control center can quickly and conveniently check for any abnormalities in the fire hydrants without firefighters having to be dispatched to the scene.



Intelligent fire hydrants provide various functions, including monitoring. First, through anti-parking sensors and speakers installed around the hydrant, they normally recognize illegally parked vehicles and broadcast a warning against parking. In the event of a fire, they notify people nearby with the message, "Emergency situation, fire, fire truck approaching in 5 minutes, please move your vehicle," helping fire trucks enter.

In addition, the heater automatically activates when the temperature of the fire hydrant drops below a certain level, preventing freezing in winter. The Gyeongbuk Fire Department plans to install and operate intelligent fire hydrants in traditional markets and commercial areas in Yeongju City, and later expand this to 23 cities and counties in the province.

Ahn Seong-jun, Executive Vice President and Head of the IoT Division at LG Uplus, stated, “The launch of intelligent fire hydrants equipped with NB-IoT technology will significantly enhance fire stations’ response capabilities in the early stages of a fire,” adding, “We hope this product will rapidly spread throughout the firefighting industry market and contribute to creating a safer Korea.”

Meanwhile, following the completion of the construction of a dedicated NB-IoT network across cities and provinces nationwide, LG Uplus has launched a smart gas pipeline network management system and pilot remote meter reading services for electricity and gas. The company also plans to introduce cargo tracking and logistics management within the year.
