Uber Autonomous Vehicle Fatal Accident Expected to Impact Autonomous Vehicle Credibility

The Tempe police chief, who is currently investigating the accident, stated that the Volvo vehicle was traveling at 65 km/h at the time of the accident. The investigation is still ongoing to determine whether the accident was caused by the Uber autonomous vehicle or pedestrian negligence.

Tempe, Arizona is known as a test bed city for autonomous vehicle operation due to its relaxed road regulations for autonomous vehicle driving. Based on the results of this accident, it appears that regulations on autonomous vehicles in Tempe and other regions considering autonomous vehicle operations in the United States will be strengthened, which will also likely impact autonomous vehicle development and testing conditions for upper-level platform development.
Considering that Uber's autonomous vehicle involved in this accident was not an unmanned vehicle but rather an autonomous vehicle with a driver on board who was simply not driving, it appears that legal responsibility may be assigned to the vehicle operator managing vehicle operation rather than to the autonomous vehicle itself.

Uber stated through a spokesperson, "We express our condolences to the victim's family and are actively cooperating with the investigation into this incident." Additionally, it suspended autonomous vehicle testing on public roads in the United States. Regions where testing has been conducted to date include Arizona, Pittsburgh, and California.
