New AI research centers established in the UK, Canada, and Russia following Korea and the US

Samsung Electronics is establishing new global artificial intelligence (AI) research centers in the UK, Canada, and Russia, following those in South Korea and the US, to strengthen its global AI research capabilities.

Samsung Electronics is opening AI research centers in Cambridge, UK (22nd), Toronto, Canada (24th), and Moscow, Russia (29th), which have strengths in the field, to secure top global talent and technology related to AI.

Prior to this, Samsung Electronics’ Samsung Research (SR), which is responsible for advanced research in the set division, established a Korea AI headquarters last November and has been strengthening its AI research capabilities, and in January of this year, it established an AI research center in Silicon Valley. With this, Samsung Electronics will have established AI research centers in a total of five regions.

Samsung Electronics plans to have its Korea AI Headquarters serve as a hub for global AI research by establishing a global AI network and fostering domestic industry-academia collaboration.

Samsung Electronics is also actively working to secure AI-related research personnel and plans to expand its AI advanced R&D workforce to over 1,000 people by 2020 (approximately 600 in Korea and 400 overseas).


The opening ceremony of the UK Cambridge AI Center, held on the 22nd (local time), was attended by Kim Hyun-suk, Head of CE Division and concurrently Head of Samsung Research; Cho Seung-hwan, Vice President and Deputy Head of Samsung Research; Kim Moon-soo, Vice President and Head of Europe; Hermann Hauser, founder of ARM; and Professor Zoubin Ghahramani of the University of Cambridge, an authority in the field of AI.

In his welcoming remarks, CEO Kim Hyun-suk stated, “Moving forward, we will focus on advanced research together with the Korea AI Headquarters to become a game changer that creates a new world in the upcoming AI era, based on Samsung’s unique strengths.”

Dr. Andrew Blake, leader of the Cambridge AI Centre, expressed his aspirations, stating, "Moving forward, we plan to conduct AI research through the AI Centre that understands human behavior and expands the boundaries of communication to provide people with a more convenient life."

On this day, Samsung Electronics announced 'U' providing thoroughly personalized services as a key direction for AI development.It presented 'Always Learning,' which continuously learns to improve performance, 'Always There,' which provides support anytime and anywhere through multiple devices, 'Always Helpful,' which is helpful while minimizing user intervention, and 'Always Safe,' which guarantees safety and privacy.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics has been working closely with world-renowned AI scholars, including hosting the AI Forum in 2017, and has been preparing to establish research bases centered on regions rich in talented individuals.

Samsung Electronics plans to actively leverage the regional strengths of these research centers to establish a world-class research environment and conduct advanced AI research, while continuously expanding its global AI research centers in regions such as the Eastern United States.
