U.S. Department of Commerce reviews autonomous driving policies of both countries

Government officials from both South Korea and the U.S., as well as autonomous driving industry executives, attended.

On the 10th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a Korea-U.S. industrial cooperation dialogue with the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C., on the topic of autonomous vehicles.

The two countries agreed to regularize the holding of industrial cooperation dialogues to build a future-oriented cooperative relationship between the two nations through the joint declaration of the ROK-US summit in June 2017 and the Commerce Ministers' meeting in April 2018.

The Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) participated in this industrial cooperation dialogue to share autonomous driving policies of both countries.

In addition, automakers from both countries, such as Hyundai Motor and GM, as well as various IT and telecommunications companies including Qualcomm, Intel, Samsung Electronics, and KT, attended to share autonomous driving research trends by sector, such as telecommunications, infrastructure, and AI, and to discuss directions for cooperation.

Noh Gun-ki, Director General of the Trade Policy Bureau, stated, “For the development of autonomous vehicles, which can be considered the core of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, convergence with various fields such as AI and telecommunications, in addition to conventional automobiles, is essential.” He added, “As various companies from both countries participated in this industrial cooperation dialogue, this occasion will serve as a catalyst to create new cooperation opportunities between the autonomous vehicle industries.”"I hope for it," he said.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the U.S. Department of Commerce plan to further solidify economic cooperation between the two countries by regularly holding industrial cooperation dialogues centered on promising areas of cooperation between Korea and the U.S.

Meanwhile, taking advantage of his visit to the U.S., Director Noh Gun-ki met with government officials, including those from the Department of Commerce, to convey Korea's position regarding Japan's export controls and request cooperation.
