As AI permeates our surroundings and daily lives, an opportunity awaits us to share advances in AI technology and the latest research outcomes.

Samsung Electronics will host the 'Samsung AI Forum 2022' over two days starting November 8th. Now in its sixth year, the 'Samsung AI Forum' is a technical exchange venue where world-renowned AI scholars and experts are invited to share the latest AI research outcomes and explore future research directions.

This forum, which reopens as an in-person event for the first time in three years following the pandemic, will be held at the InterContinental Seoul COEX on day one and at Samsung Electronics Seoul R&D Campus on day two, with live online streaming through Samsung Electronics' YouTube channel.

Registration for forum participation is being accepted from the 18th through the day of the event on the Samsung AI Forum website, where attendees can check detailed program schedules and register online questions.

■ Day One Forum, 'AI and Semiconductors Shaping the Future'

The day one forum, conducted by Samsung Electronics' Advanced Institute of Technology, centers on the theme "Shaping the future with AI and Semiconductor," discussing the current state of AI technology research and development directions that will lead a new future, including semiconductor and materials innovation through AI technology applications.

Beginning with opening remarks by Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee, the day features a keynote address by Professor Yoshua Bengio from the University of Montreal, Canada, followed by technical sessions covering △AI for R&D Innovation △Advances in AI Algorithms △Large-scale Computing for AI.

In each technical session, renowned scholars from home and abroad as well as research leaders from the Advanced Institute of Technology in the AI field will present on AI technologies across various domains. Professor Seo Min-jun from KAIST and Professor Song Hyun-oh from Seoul National University will introduce the latest AI algorithm research outcomes, while Alan Gara, former IBM and Intel fellow and world-renowned supercomputing expert, will speak on computing evolution and the future of AI. Research leaders including Vice President Choi Chang-gyou, Director of the Advanced Institute's AI Research Center, will share the institute's AI research status and vision.

Additionally, the 'Samsung AI Researcher of the Year' award ceremony for discovering outstanding early-stage AI researchers and the 'Samsung AI Challenge' awards ceremony for domestic university and graduate students will be held the same day.

Various other programs promoting AI research activities will also be conducted, including outstanding paper poster presentations, Advanced Institute introductions and AI research project exhibitions, and AI researcher networking events.

Jin Gyo-young, President of the Advanced Institute of Technology and co-chair of the Samsung AI Forum, stated, "We will prepare this AI forum to be a venue for discussing the technological direction for creating a better future as AI technology is applied to various fields including semiconductors," and added, "We hope this will be an opportunity for many people interested in AI to participate and engage in active exchange."

■ Day Two Forum, 'Scaling AI for the Real World'

The day two forum, conducted by Samsung Research, centers on the theme "Scaling AI for the real world," sharing the development direction of future AI technologies that will significantly impact our lives, such as ultra-large-scale AI, digital humans, and robotics technologies that have recently become hot topics.

Samsung Research Executive Vice President Seung Hyun-jun, director of the research institute, will deliver welcoming remarks and keynote address on "Evolutionary approach to brain-inspired learning algorithms."

Following a presentation by Samsung Research Global AI Center Director Vice President Daniel Lee on "Samsung Research's AI Research Status," invited lectures by global corporate research institute directors and AI experts will be conducted.

Professor Terrence Sejnowski from UC San Diego, founder of NeurIPS, the world's most prestigious artificial intelligence conference, will deliver a lecture on the topic "Do ultra-large language models possess intelligence?"

Subsequently, Dr. Johannes Gehrke, director of Microsoft Research, will explain the core technologies of ultra-large-scale AI and Microsoft's next-generation AI research direction.

Professor Dieter Fox from the University of Washington (UW), director of NVIDIA Robotics Research, will present on robot technologies that manipulate objects without explicit models, and Professor Hwang Seung-won from Seoul National University will deliver a lecture on natural language processing technology.

Finally, Vice President Daniel Lee will conduct a panel discussion with the speakers on recent AI trends and future prospects, with a presentation and demonstration session of recent research activities by Samsung Research AI Research Center researchers also scheduled.

President Seung Hyun-jun stated, "I hope the Samsung AI Forum will be an opportunity to enhance understanding of various AI research currently being conducted in terms of 'AI expansion in practical life' to increase the value of our lives," and added, "I anticipate that many people interested in AI will participate in this forum being held both online and offline."
